I have been a practicing pediatrician for 39 years and then did a 2 year fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Montefiore Children's Hospital in Bronx, New York. We are in a mental health crisis for kids, teens, and young adults. I meet with parents and do a thorough intake to learn everything about the family and the history of the child's past history. I spend time with teens so they trust the confidentiality of our relationship. I focus on trust and comfort for the child and teen. I learn about the goals of the parent and child/teen.
I play games with kids in the office and I ask kids to draw and tell stories to help kids get comfortable. We go outside to walk and talk about feelings. We have a snack and enjoy good humor. We are building a relationship of trust. CBT, Motivational Interviewing and Psychodynamics are used in treatment.
I like creating space for kids and their parents; we work slowly and creatively. I want kids to feel safe and know that they can read a book, write a story, and listen to favorite music while in therapy. I like kids to ask questions and take the lead. If they have homework, I look at it and can help them sometimes! I want kids to see me as trustworthy!
