The most meaningful, rewarding part of my work, both for my patients and for me, is the healing relationship that develops in psychotherapy sessions. With prescribed medications or not, psychotherapy is a better way of taking advantage of my additional training and experience in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, a mind-body relationship specialty, and especially of my psychoanalytic training, a way of listening and observing which invites both the patient and the doctor to treat the mind with the curiosity, humility and respect it deserves. Therapy is often very difficult, but it can become your most cherished journey.
I like the psychodynamic/psychoanalytic approach due to the nature of the method of addressing psychological issues: instead of waging war against inconvenient, misunderstood parts of the mind (the symptoms), it seeks enlightenment, acceptance and integration. When successful, it feels more like a liberation, and unlike a Pyrrhic victory or an ongoing war.
With treatment, my patients find themselves less conflicted; more efficient in pursuing their goals, or finding new ones; less inclined to criticize, silence or suppress aspects of themselves; more alive; more meaningfully engaged with others; more adaptable, more at ease in dealing with the challenges that life brings to them; happier owners of their minds.
