I tend to work with individuals who want more than a quick fix or surface-level approach. I give careful attention to medication and patterns, behaviors, and underlying factors that contribute to how you are feeling. My goal is to help you feel more stable and better equipped to move forward in your life—with a treatment approach that is attainable. I use a more focused practice in order to provide care to each individual. My approach is best suited for those seeking a higher level of care that is both practical and deeply considered.

As a provider, I enjoy connecting with clients and getting to know them on a personal level. Once I can understand the person and their journey, together we can develop goals for achieving and maintaining their mental health. I understand that reaching out for help is not always easy, but I am willing to meet them where they are. My passion is working with adults experiencing mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, PTSD, and those navigating life as BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals. I am currently accepting new patients, both in-person and virtually.

My ideal clients are children, adolescents, and adults who feel anxious, overwhelmed, stuck, or frustrated that they aren’t living up to their potential, and who want to understand themselves rather than feel rushed into quick fixes. Parents I work with often feel guilt, worry, or exhaustion as they try to support a struggling child. They appreciate care that recognizes their efforts, builds on their strengths, and acknowledges what they are already doing well. Many of my clients are hesitant about medication and value clear explanations, collaboration, and care that moves at a comfortable pace.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy focuses on the unconscious meanings of thoughts and feelings rather than focusing upon behavior. I’m interested in helping children, adolescents and adults discover the patterns in their emotional and cognitive worlds in order to gain insight into themselves, towards a deeper understanding and integration of unconscious processes into daily life. After obtaining my medical degree at McGill University in 1982, I interned in Montreal in internal medicine before coming to the University of Chicago to complete my residency in general psychiatry and then a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry in 1990.

The ideal client for me is someone who is motivated to address their mental health challenges and is seeking guidance and support to improve their well-being. They may be a teenager or young adult who has been struggling to manage the symptoms of anxiety and ADHD, impacting their daily life, relationships, and overall sense of fulfillment. Their issues may include feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, experiencing difficulty concentrating and staying organized due to ADHD, and navigating the stressors of school, work, or social life. They may have tried various coping strategies on their own but have not seen significant improvement.

FAQ - Family Therapy Psychiatrists
Do psychiatrists provide family therapy?
Some psychiatrists do provide family therapy as part of their practice, but it is less common than individual treatment. While all psychiatrists are trained in psychotherapy during their training, most focus their practice on individual medication management and one-on-one therapy. Family therapy is typically the specialty of licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs), licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), and psychologists who have more dedicated training in family systems and group dynamics.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a family therapist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who can prescribe medication and provide medical evaluations for mental health conditions, while a family therapist focuses exclusively on therapeutic interventions without the ability to prescribe medication. Family therapists (often licensed as LMFTs or LCSWs) complete master's level training specifically in family systems theory, which examines how family members interact and influence each other's behavior and emotional well-being. Psychiatrists receive medical training that focuses more on the biological, rather than relational, aspects of mental illness.

Do I need an individual psychiatrist or a family psychiatrist?
What kind of mental health clinician is needed depends on the nature of the problem you are facing. Individual psychiatry is better when you have specific psychiatric symptoms (like panic attacks, mood swings, or psychotic symptoms) that require professional diagnosis and potentially medication. Family therapy provided by a psychiatrist, in contrast, may be a good fit when problems manifest in family relationships, such as parent-child conflicts, communication challenges, or adjusting to major family transitions like divorce or grief. In some cases, it may be appropriate to see both an individual and a family psychiatrist if there are individual and relationship-related concerns in a family simultaneously. For example, a teenager with depression might see a psychiatrist for medication and symptom monitoring while the entire family attends therapy together to improve communication and support the teen's recovery.
