Hi, my name is Kimberly Lopez, and I am a psychiatric and family nurse practitioner. I love working with all age groups, from pediatric to geriatric. I have almost two years of experience in the nurse practitioner role, but I have a little over 10 years of critical care nursing before I became a nurse practitioner. I was born and raised in Chicago, IL, where I still reside. I am the first in my family to graduate from college.

I am board-certified in both General Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison (CL) Psychiatry (Fellowship at The University of Chicago). I am a psychologically- and nutritionally- oriented psychiatrist that promotes patient empowerment through education and the collaborative construction of treatment plans. I aim to bridge the gaps between brain-body-psychology-and medicine, while developing an understanding and appreciation for a person's lived experience.

I have a wide variety of experience with treating conditions such as anxiety, depression, and thought disorders across the lifespan. I am currently accepting pediatric (6yrs+), adolescent, and adult patients. I had a background in family practice prior to transitioning into psychiatry and thus love caring for both individuals and multiple generations of the same family.

I use a holistic approach, treating the full person rather than just symptoms. I specialize in treating Adults and Adolescents (12 years and up) with mood, self-esteem, and concentration problems, as well as working with more diffuse issues around identity, interpersonal relationships, and professional achievement. I address emotional distress and difficulties in daily living. This could manifest as depression, anxiety, insomnia, problems with intimacy or self-esteem, problems with concentration, feeling excessively angry or guilty, or trouble finding meaning in life, to name only a few.

I am most interested in collaborating in a way that allows for optimal outcomes. How this takes form depends on your individual needs. A common difficulty people face is obtaining clear information from their doctor. It can be frustrating for the patient and for the family to receive information from a team of providers in a way that sounds like individual voices that are not in synchrony as opposed to a concise, cogent summary of the available information that affects decision-making.

In reflective fashion, Kermit the Frog once sang, “it’s not easy being green”. If we replace “green” with anxious, angry, sad, depressed, lonely, or hurt, we feel the truth of the lyric. But for many of us that feel “green” over time, it can start to feel like it’s not easy being “me”. To make things even more difficult, most of the things that make us, “us”, are physically unseen; our personalities, our traumas (known or unknown), our beliefs, our emotions and thoughts. Navigating the “unseen” aspects in all of us is what fuels my passion in psychiatry, and to offer any support in that journey, is an honor I do not take lightly.

As a group psychotherapist and addiction psychiatrist, I am available to work with you on any phase of recovery from addictions, compulsive behaviors and the effects of being in a relationship with an addict (whether parent, sibling, partner or child). I understand addiction as a broad disease, including substances (alcohol, nicotine, opiates, stimulants, sedatives and other drugs), food, sex, money, work and codependence. I often work in collaboration with individual therapists and mutual support groups to enhance the effectiveness of each intervention.

As a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr Smajkic is applying his knowledge and skills as a Psycho-pharmacologist, Behaviorist and Cognitive Behavioral therapist. The focus of his care are ADHD disorders, Learning disorders, Developmental disorders, Mood disorders and Anxiety disorders.

As a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I have worked with patients of all ages and in multiple settings. I have 13 years of nursing experience working in various areas including home health, psychiatric in/outpatient settings, eating disorders, residential, and substance abuse. Dr. Onyejiaka, a Board Certified Psychiatrist and Pediatrician, received her Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Missouri at Kansas City Combined B.A/M.D. Program. She endured further training at the Tulane University Triple Board Residency Program where she specialized in pediatric medicine, general psychiatry, as well as child and adolescent psychiatry. Additionally, she attended in the New Orleans'-Birmingham Psychoanalytic Center Honorary Fellowship Program prior to relocating to Chicago in recent years. Dr. Onyejiaka is an active member of the International Society for Sports Psychiatry, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
