Over the past 20 years working in mental healthcare, I have enjoyed the great opportunity to serve patients and their families. As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I worked first at the San Francisco VA Medical Center, through their post-graduate residency program, and then for the past several years, I worked with medically underserved populations throughout New Mexico, first in person and then via telehealth.

I use a holistic and compassionate approach in my practice. I believe loyalty and integrity must be the basis for every encounter. As a Psychiatrist, hearing patients out and understanding what symptoms they consider most impairing to them is the most important part of my personal practice. I prefer a collaborative space where both myself and the patient can talk about their conditions in an in depth way, in order to find what specific treatments will work best for them. To me, an ideal patient has good insight into their condition or is willing to develop this through dedication towards treatment.

What are their issues, their needs, their goals? What do they want and why? I have enjoyed working with a wide variety of adults and youth over my career so far. My only requirements from patients are honesty and a desire for self-improvement.

I am a general adult psychiatrist with experience treating a variety of conditions and a special interest in OCD, student-athlete mental health, mood and anxiety disorders. I employ a holistic view of mental health that first requires being curious about the unique dynamics that might be affecting your well-being. While medications are often important, I also believe in addressing aspects of one’s lifestyle (sleep, exercise, diet) and examining interpersonal, occupational, among other stressors in a judgement-free, supportive environment.

I have worked in multiple settings including emergency room, inpatient acute care, detoxification center, drug rehabilitation, outpatient, as well as at a correctional facility. Working in these various settings have exposed me to various psychiatric illnesses in different settings with varying severity. I focused on patient-centric treatment and have realized the importance of patients understanding the illness and making treatment choices based on their complete understanding. I firmly believe that patient’s active participation in the treatment and having good understanding of the illness facilitates good outcomes.

Over the years working as a psychiatrist, I have developed extensive knowledge and expertise in managing challenging patients with variety of psychiatric diagnoses. I have focused my expertise on helping people struggling with complex psychiatric problems; patients who have not found relief from their symptoms despite multiple previous treatments. The approach I find the most effective for treatment resistant, seemingly hopeless problems in psychiatry is tailoring a unique treatment protocols for each patient.

Having seen a wide area of complex patients with complex diagnoses and in complex situations in various situations, I prides myself on being able to step back and take a deep thorough dive into patient histories to really try and tease out all a person’s complexities, so that the plan I come up with can be as tailored to each individual. I also take less of a formal psychoanalytic-style of approach to psychiatry, and more so realize I am working with a person.

I embrace a collaborative approach with my patients. I want to provide knowledge and experience so as to empower my patients to make informed decisions about their available treatment options. My style is grounded in the mind-body connection by blending mindfulness, behaviors, and holistic interventions with medications.

I have been in practice for over 25 years serving patients and communities in different roles. I believe in keeping the patient’s concerns front and center when making treatment plans and it delights me to see them get better. I believe many individuals are capable of brilliant insights that can bring lasting joy and peace in their lives. I believe in the great potential of cognitive behavior therapy and other therapies. Sometimes therapy works even better when combined with the right psychiatric medication. I enjoy working with other clinicians on collaborative care.

I am a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP), trained across the lifespan but specialized with children, adolescents and families. In addition to practicing from a strengths-based perspective, I have taught child/adolescent/family psychotherapy at UCSF, where I am a Professor Emeritus in the PMHNP and DNP programs. Furthermore, I am a Fellow with American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP).

I have a special interest in working with individuals from diverse cultural, social, sexual, and ethnic backgrounds, while cultivating cultural humility.
