Harry Lesch, MD, Psychiatrist in Eureka
I consider growth and creativity to be the primary aspects of psychological health. When they are blocked, symptoms of a psychiatric disorder may develop. Anxiety and depression are the most common examples which I see my practice. I usually offer to prescribe medications to reduce the symptoms and to restore normal functioning. Further counseling sessions are then scheduled, either with me or with a therapist. This allows patients to develop new coping strategies which they can integrate into their lives. I particularly enjoy working with college students and faculty, health care and mental health professionals, performing artists, writers, and photographers.
I am most comfortable prescribing non-addictive medications, such as antidepressants and mood stabilizers. I also use medications to treat attention-deficit disorder. I prefer to avoid using medications for anxiety disorders because of their potential for creating dependency.
In my work as a therapist, I encourage my patients to rely on their own inner wisdom and intuition. Spontaneity is essential in my work. Boredom (mine or yours) usually indicates that our work is at an impasse. Laughter often occurs when old, useless patterns of behavior are being dissolved.
