My philosophy of care as a psych nurse practitioners direct me toward diagnose and treating mental illness through psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, case management, and clinical supervision. I as a provider function independently to meet patient care needs within my scope of practice. Psychiatric Nursing to me is all about the relationship you establish with your patients, understanding them from their perspective and asking them what they think is going on with their health or what has been changing in their body and mind.
I like to ask, how do you feel? What do you think? Asking these questions gives me a door to perceive patients in a holistic manner. It helps me as a psychiatric NP understand if patient’s symptoms are just physical or are psychological.
