To understand people, you must try to hear what they are not saying, what they perhaps, will never be able to say.

I believe that listening is so important. It sounds simple, but I've seen many patients over the years who I believe were misdiagnosed simply because no one truly listened to them or asked the right questions. It could mean the difference between treating someone for years for major depressive disorder when they may have bipolar II disorder which typically doesn't improve with antidepressants alone. We, as nurse practitioners, are trained to listen, assess, and treat the whole person.

Each person is a unique individual and there is no single "ideal" client. I believe that the main goal is for the person to learn to love himself/herself. Use of medications is to help balance mood swings or correct low serotonin levels which causes anxiety

Children, adolescents, and adults often need medical interventions to improve their level of emotional functioning. Through comprehensive evaluation, individualized recommendations may be provided to develop a road map for successful treatment. This may consist of medical treatment, a referral to a therapist, or a combination of the two.

After completing medical training at Yale medical school, I began my career in family medicine. Even at that time, I was interested in mental health and addiction. As a physician assistant, I can provide medical care, evaluations, med management including anti-craving medications. So much of our lives are affected by our state mind and a prescription is not always the answer. Sometimes it is the other resources to assist the patient. My objective is to work with the patient to achieve their goals for a healthy lifestyle. I get a wave of excitement when I watch people turn their lives around! Medicine is not a job, it's a passion!

After practicing traditional psychiatry with a strong focus on medication management for 10 years, I found myself wondering why so many of my clients were still stuck in painful cycles of anxiety and depression. Medications can be immensely helpful for some individuals, but for countless others they seem to merely mask symptoms while deeper healing needs go unmet. I now practice holistic psychiatry which can be defined as an approach that addresses the psychological, familial, societal, biological and spiritual dimensions of health and illness.
