Robert is a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner MSN, APRN,PMHNP-BC. Roberts professional career spans over a decade in various environments from Intensive care, Case Management and other various leadership roles. Robert enjoys nothing better than coming alongside someone to help them to achieve a greater sense of well-being and fulfillment in life. Although he considers ADHD his specialty, Robert is able to treat a wide array of conditions including PTSD, Depression, Anxiety Disorders, OCD, Bipolar Disorder and many others.

I provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and treatment for children, adolescents, and young adults for a variety of mental health disorders including anxiety, mood dysregulation, ADHD, trauma, tics, psychosis, and/or behavioral concerns. Since 2018, I have worked as one of only three psychiatrists at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital . As a tertiary pediatric referral center, our psychiatric department at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital fields the most difficult cases. I have over a decade of experience and have delivered care to a myriad of patients including crisis center in Philadelphia.

I am experienced in providing evidence-based psychopharmacological treatments for a wide range of psychiatric conditions.

Before accomplishing my educational goals, I served in the United States Army, and was a law enforcement officer. I have been a paramedic for more than a decade, and have been deployed overseas. I credit my civil service experience in helping prepare me to help others better understand the impacts of trauma and stress both mentally and physically. I see all ages from 6 years of age and up. I am LGBTQ supportive, and feel everyone should be encouraged to be themselves and loved! I continue to support our veterans, first responders, emergency services personnel through my clinical work, helping those that help others!

Dr. Thorkelson is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Medicine at The University of Pittsburgh. He completed his adult residency training at Temple University and his child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at The University of Pittsburgh where he continued on in three roles: as Associate Medical Director at the Center for Integrative Medicine, as staff psychiatrist at the John Merck Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders, and through the Visceral Inflammation and Pain (VIP) Center in the Department of Gastroenterology. Dr. Thorkelson specializes in the treatment of anxiety, autism, ADHD, and depression.

I am board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and have been practicing for over 6 years. I believe in a comprehensive treatment approach in order to understand and treat underlying issues and achieve overall wellness.
