I am a psychoanalyst and board-certified psychiatrist. Individuals with real-world concerns: struggling in their work lives, relationships or school, feeling stuck in ways that may be difficult to define can often do well with psychotherapy. There may not be a need to recommend medication when we're curious to understand how and why our minds have taken us to where we are, or what it is about how we have experienced the world that may be preventing us from living life more fully.
While medication might be the life raft that can help us stay afloat, it cannot teach us to swim. Imaging studies show that similar changes in the brain occur whether medication or psychotherapy is started. The treatment utilized is an important personal decision and deserves careful consideration for each person's unique circumstance.
Ultimately, any treatment success depends on whether there is a good fit between therapist and patient. "Fit" may refer to many things, among which a sense of emotional and mental safety is paramount to growing beyond where we are.
