I don't do 10-15 minute med checks because I don't believe you can properly prescribe medication if you don't understand what is going on with the patient. History is everything in psychiatry and studies consistently show that therapy plus medication works better than either one alone. I use a biopsychosocial approach and treat the whole patient, and coordinate care with other providers. I also do home visits for homebound patients on Mondays and Fridays. I was profiled in the American Psychiatric Nurses Association national newsletter March 2012 issue.

FAQ - About Geriatric Psychiatry
What do geriatric psychiatrists do?
Geriatric psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in the mental health needs of older adults. They diagnose and treat mental health conditions that may become more common or complex with age, including Alzheimer’s disease, other forms of dementia, depression, and anxiety, particularly when these conditions occur alongside cognitive decline or other health concerns. They can also support patients coping with challenges related to aging, such as grief and loss, chronic illness, changes in independence, or major life transitions. While some geriatric psychiatrists provide psychotherapy, most focus on medication management and assessment/evaluation. Many help older adults and their families navigate decisions related to medication, changes in cognitive functioning, and future care needs. They often collaborate with neurologists, primary care physicians, and other medical specialists to ensure that mental health treatment is coordinated with other aspects of a person’s care.
How do geriatric psychiatrists assess mental and physical health?
Given their medical training, geriatric psychiatrists are equipped to conduct cognitive and neuropsychiatric evaluations that go beyond standard mental health assessments. They evaluate memory, attention, executive function, and behavioral changes to distinguish between normal age-related cognitive decline and diagnosable conditions such as Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Because some neurological conditions like dementia may initially present with psychiatric symptoms, they can also assess how various non-psychiatric medical factors (e.g., medications, physical health conditions) may contribute to a client’s condition. The results of these evaluations can inform treatment planning, including medication management, patient safety considerations, and potential referral to other specialists, such as a neurologist.
Can a geriatric psychiatrist help with dementia and Alzheimer's disease?
A geriatric psychiatrist can play an important role in treating Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. In addition to conducting assessments, they can help with ongoing monitoring of the condition to track disease progression over time. A psychiatrist can also prescribe medications that may be used to reduce distressing symptoms, stabilize mood, or address behavioral symptoms. Psychiatrists who specialize in this area may be particularly helpful in evaluating medication options for dementia and related behavioral or psychological symptoms. They are experienced at considering factors such as a person’s age, other medical conditions, existing medications, and sensitivity to side effects when recommending treatment.
How can I find a geriatric psychiatrist?
The Psychology Today online directory is a valuable resource for finding psychiatrists (MDs) and psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) who specialize in working with older adults. The platform offers search filters to narrow results based on specialty areas that may be relevant to older adults and their caregivers, such as dementia, sleep or insomnia, and chronic illness. You may also consider using the “Age” filter option of “Seniors” to narrow your search to psychiatrists who have indicated a specialty working with seniors. Each clinician profile offers detailed information on therapeutic approach, professional credentials, accepted insurance, languages spoken, and session fees. Reviewing this information can help individuals, families, and caregivers identify providers who best align with their needs—whether they're seeking support after a recent diagnosis or ongoing care throughout the later stages of life.
