About
I am Board-Certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry with added certification by ASAM and ABQAURP. I have served as faculty at Cornell, USC, and Baylor. Most recently I was privileged to serve as Director of Professional Assessments, Associate Chief of Staff, and Eating Disorders Program Medical Director at the Menninger Clinic. My specialty is addictive disorders and dual diagnosis (co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders). I work with professionals in high performance fields who also struggle with career transition, stress/ burnout, and disruptive behaviors. Additionally, I consult to organizations and conduct fitness to practice professional assessments.
Thorough assessment is critical. Substances precipitate or worsen psychiatric symptoms; conversely psychiatric illness increases addiction risk. Overcoming barriers like overwork, perfectionism, denial, or extreme self-reliance is essential. Treatment then integrates pharmacological and non-pharmacological (e.g. motivational enhancement, relapse prevention, psychodynamic psychotherapy, self-help) therapies, involving all care providers.
The initial treatment goal is abstinence so that recovery can begin while allowing accurate assessment of psychiatric symptoms. For some, harm reduction may be what is feasible. My approach is to advance motivation for sobriety, diagnose and treat comorbid disorders, cultivate development of adaptive coping, and facilitate relapse prevention efforts.
