Maybe you're trans /non-binary/gender-nonconforming and are tired of explaining everything to prescribers. Perhaps you're anxious or depressed about app dating or a recent kink or OnlyFans effort. Maybe, you're not out (or fully out) and need medication to help the anxiety.

I am a board certified psychiatrist who specializes in helping the invisible feel seen. I combine creative thinking with evidence based medicine to meet the unique needs posed by each client. As a Black, queer , woman, my lens as a psychiatrist as is shaped by navigating society’s standards as an individual with marginalized identities. Everyone is welcome at my clinic. For creatives, individuals with intersectional identities, and those with little faith in psychiatry, that means you. Note: I do not take insurance.

***Offering Same Week Appointments** With a therapy-first model, I want you to feel in control and share in the decision-making process to start any medications. I order labs to rule out common "physiological" reasons for feeling the way you do. It's a longer approach, but our patients feel heard, respected, and most importantly- hopeful. I have extensive experience working with college-transition/young adult patients, LGBTQ + persons, and minorities.

LGBTQ+ Psychiatrists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.

About Psychiatrists, meds and Psychiatric Nurses.

A Psychiatrist in Washington is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in treating mental health issues and diagnosable disorders.

Washington Psychiatrists differ from other mental health professionals in that they may prescribe medication as well as practice psychotherapy in treatment. Sometimes, Psychiatrists form part of a clinical team in which they will diagnose and prescribe, while psychologists or therapists provide the client's psychotherapy.

As part of a clinical assessment, Psychiatrists may conduct physical examinations, take blood tests, and order and interpret lab tests and brain image scans, such as CT scans, CAT Scans, and MRIs.

The field of psychiatry in Washington has many sub-specialties, including pediatric psychiatry. Those who work with the elderly are called geriatric psychiatrists.

Other related sub-specialties include cognition psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, psychosomatic, forensic, reproductive medicine specialties, psychopharmacology , psychiatric genetics, neuroimaging, and clinical neurophysiology.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners in Washington, or mental health nurse practitioners, generally have an MS degree in nursing (MSN) and a number of years of training to become certified. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are able to assess and diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. Washington Psychiatric nurse practitioners also have training that enables them to include psychotherapy with treatment.
