After 20 years of working in the mental health field, I have learned that although psychotherapy can be a life changing experience, it is not always enough to adequately manage mental health symptoms. When patients are still experiencing debilitating symptoms of depression, anxiety, impulsiveness, or difficulty with concentration, then psychotropic medications may be beneficial. Medications may bring patients relief from overwhelming worry or panic symptoms, low mood and motivation, and mood swings or irritability.
I have 18 years of experience as a Registered Nurse working in inpatient psychiatry with the child and adolescent population from 1998-2016, and almost 4 years of experience as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner working with children, adolescents, adults, and seniors with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, thought disorders, and ADHD.
When medications are required to manage mental health symptoms, safety, efficacy, and patient education are the keys to success. Finding the lowest effective dose to manage symptoms can make the coping skills patients are learning in therapy more accessible. This can help patients improve functioning and continue on their path of self-discovery and growth.
