I work with clients who struggle with depression or anxiety related to relationship issues, parenting, and/or challenging life transitions.
Life is an amazing and unpredictable journey we all share. It can bring joy, success, love and optimism, and also present extreme challenges, loss, sadness, grief and despair. We can sometimes feel overwhelmed, stressed or "stuck" for many reasons involving relationships, life transitions, illness, trauma, and personal circumstances. This can lead to depression, anxiety, mood swings and uncertainty about how to feel better and move forward. Regardless of what challenges you are facing, no situation is hopeless and there is always a way forward to a better you and and a better life.

Do you find yourself cut off from feelings or going in circles in your current relationship?
I am friendly, transparent, respectful, and knowledgeable. My original training was as a scientist, so I am always asking questions and revising ideas about what may be leading to problems. I have taught psychotherapy at Yale (DBT) and I've been called an "emotional phenomenologist", which I think is an apt description.

I am experienced in helping young children, teenagers, adults, couples, and families.
I am a Yale University-trained Adult and Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist who meets patients "where they're at". This means that I personalize each treatment plan for each individual, not based on a one-size-fits-all, robotic, regimen. No two people are the same, so my treatment plans should not be either. Each patient can expect to receive top-quality, compassionate, individualized care, whether that includes medications or just therapy, with tangible resources that they can utilize outside of our appointment times. There is no such thing as a "difficult" patient, only a patient who we have not figured out how to help yet.

I've treated a broad range of people over the years, many with biologic mood/anxiety problems who benefit primarily from medication and many with relationship problems who benefit primarily from talk therapy, especially in a couples' setting.
I have decades of experience treating mood disorders with pharmacologic agents in a research setting at Columbia University but understand the limits of medication and the need, at times, to address relationship difficulties to effect changes in mood and behavior.

Couples Counseling Psychiatrists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
