The decision to go into therapy is not an easy one. As an advanced practice psychiatric nurse with 20+ years of experience, I have found that by providing a safe, supportive, and caring atmosphere, my clients can express their thoughts and feelings, understand themselves better, and feel empowered to make changes in their lives. As a nurse psychotherapist, I integrate an understanding of my clients' medical, family, social, and emotional issues to help them attain their optimal level of mental health. I am also able to prescribe medication to facilitate treatment of mood disorders and anxiety affecting my clients.
My approach is interactive and collaborative, focused on personal understanding and self-acceptance, problem solving strategies and personal growth. I encourage clients to explore how past influences and families of origin have impacted on their current situation, and identify changes that can be made in the present.
In addition to my therapy practice, I retired in 2018 from my position as Senior Professor at Union County College where I taught nursing for 25 years in a program with widely diverse students. My teaching experience has given me a broad perspective on the many issues faced by young adults and second career students.
