Most of the men I see put this off for months — sometimes years. If that's you, you're in the right place. I'm Dr. Mike. My practice works exclusively with men, because men experience mental health differently and deserve care built around that. The depression that shows up as irritability or anger. The ADHD that got you through school but is costing you at work. The burnout you keep calling "just stress." The grief or life transition you're trying to power through alone. I see it every day, and it's treatable.

My psychiatry practice is focused on you and how you can best achieve your goals, whether that is medication, psychotherapy, lifestyle changes, or a combination of all three. Let's work together to help you get 'unstuck'. As a psychiatrist I am comfortable with prescribing medications as well as therapy. The first half of my residency training was in the Family Medicine Dept. at the University of Iowa, and the second was in Psychiatry at the University of South Alabama, where I am an Adjunct Professor. Psychiatry was the natural choice because I enjoy having the time to listen and understand in order to personalize recommendations.

You may feel overwhelmed, anxious, emotionally drained, or not like yourself lately. Some people struggle with constant worry, low mood, difficulty focusing, or poor sleep, while others feel stuck in survival mode despite appearing fine on the outside. Many of the adults I work with are used to carrying a lot for others and have put their own mental health on the back burner. You want clarity, emotional balance, and support so you can feel more grounded and present in your life again.

Dr. Patrick Sassoon
Psychiatrist, MD, MS
San Jose, CA 95113
My approach is based on integrative psychiatry, which uses medications, therapy and complementary medicine to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms.
Originally from Brazil, I moved to the US 20+ years ago to pursue a Master's degree in Counseling, and worked as a therapist for several years before becoming a Medical Doctor. My experience as a therapist has given me a deeper understanding of my patients' struggles, allowing me to address the root of their issues rather than superficially treat symptoms.

FAQ - Integrative Psychiatrists
What is integrative psychiatry?
Integrative psychiatry is an approach in which a psychiatrist draws from multiple treatment modalities, including different types of psychotherapy and medication management, to create a treatment plan tailored to an individual's specific needs. Rather than relying on a single therapeutic technique or defaulting straight to medication, an integrative psychiatrist considers a client's health holistically and collaborates with them to identify the most effective combination of treatments.

What can an integrative psychiatrist help with?
An integrative psychiatrist can address a wide range of mental health concerns by combining therapeutic approaches with medical expertise. Because psychiatrists can both prescribe medication and provide psychotherapy, they are uniquely positioned to adjust treatment plans based on how a client responds to different interventions. Integrative psychiatry can be part of a treatment plan for anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, trauma, OCD, ADHD, personality disorders, substance use disorders, and a variety of other conditions. An integrated approach may be particularly useful when a mental health condition has not historically responded to one form of treatment alone.

How do I know if integrative psychiatry is right for me?
Integrative psychiatry may be a good fit if you have previously tried a single treatment approach, such as medication or therapy alone, and have not seen the results you were hoping for. It may also be worth exploring if your symptoms feel complex or interconnected, if you prefer a more collaborative approach to your care, or if you want a provider who will consider multiple factors contributing to your mental health rather than focusing solely on medication management. On the other hand, if your condition is well-managed with a straightforward treatment plan of therapy or medication alone, a regular psychiatrist may be sufficient. The best way to determine whether integrative psychiatry is the right approach is to schedule a consultation with a prospective psychiatrist to discuss your treatment history, current symptoms, and goals of care.
