I often use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ( CBT) in my practice.
Great to meet you! I realize that most of us could use support, especially during times of overwhelming challenges in our personal and professional lives. Life can be complex, with significant obligations and expectations from family, friends, and ourselves. When these challenges become too much, it’s normal to start doubting our ability to manage our affairs and interactions. If stress, doubt, and dissatisfaction go unaddressed, these feelings can develop into an unhealthy view of ourselves and our environment—and it’s at this point that many recognize a need for help.

Sessions integrate psychiatric medicine, digital lifestyle training, psychoeducation, and psychotherapy in a seamless manner. I have a special interest in the effects of ubiquitous daily use of technology on human relationships which includes the effects of video games, social media, and mobile phone use. As technology becomes more seamlessly woven into our lives, a person’s digital psycho-social experiences become equally important as a person’s real life. Other psychiatric interests include a focus on ADHD, impulse control disorders, anxiety, depression, OCD, and Tourette’s syndrome.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one approach I often use.
Maybe you've noticed yourself having a really hard time at work or school, snapping at people you love, or feeling like your thoughts won't slow down long enough to catch your breath. Maybe it's a low mood or dip in self-esteem that follows you into every room, or a restlessness that keeps your mind racing even when your body is exhausted. Perhaps your focus feels like it slips through your fingers no matter how hard you try to hold onto it. You may be wondering whether things could feel different, and whether medication or other treatment could help. You deserve care and support that meets you where you are.

My primary goal is to help people achieve a state of wellness and the ability to live life to their full potential. I am licensed to see clients in Hawai'i, California and Texas. I worked as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Hawai'i, Manoa and I volunteered with the Entertainment Industries Council which advocates for accurate portrayal of mental health and substance abuse issues in entertainment and media. I know what type of stigma can be associated with mental health issues and what barriers my clients face on their path to wellness.

I use a collaborative, practical approach that combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ( CBT) with coaching strategies to help clients create meaningful change.
Many of the adults I work with are intelligent, successful professionals who have spent years feeling overwhelmed, mentally exhausted, disorganized, or unable to perform at the level they know they're capable of—despite appearing highly functional to others. Often, anxiety, perfectionism, burnout, or years of hard work have masked underlying ADHD. My practice specializes in the evaluation and treatment of adult ADHD in entrepreneurs, executives, healthcare professionals, attorneys, and other high-achieving adults throughout California.

Psychiatrist, MD
Pasadena, CA 91101
Many people come to us after care has felt fragmented: medication in one place, therapy somewhere else, testing that doesn’t translate into a plan. Mind Study Center was built for more coordinated care. Our psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists work together, so medication, therapy, and testing can inform one clear treatment plan. As an out of network practice, we’re able to spend more time understanding the person, the family, and the clinical pattern behind the symptoms.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably not feeling your best self. I often see patients who are struggling at work or have relationship problems. Some don’t have the motivation or energy to make change in their lives. I believe in collaborating closely with the patient in understanding their problem and recommending an evidence-based treatment plan that best serves their needs and goals.

FAQ - Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Psychiatrists
Do psychiatrists provide cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?
Yes, many psychiatrists provide CBT as a therapeutic approach in sessions with clients. CBT is an evidence-based form of therapy that focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to mental health challenges. Psychiatrists who provide CBT can be particularly valuable when your condition may benefit from both therapy *and* medication, such as depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD or PTSD. However, some psychiatrists choose to focus primarily on medication management rather than ongoing therapy. When evaluating potential psychiatrists, it can be helpful to confirm that they actively incorporate CBT techniques into their practice (rather than focusing solely on prescribing medication)

What is the difference between CBT with a psychiatrist versus a therapist?
The primary difference between CBT with a psychiatrist versus a therapist is that a psychiatrist can integrate medication management with CBT treatment, while non-psychiatrist therapists (such as psychologists, counselors, or social workers) provide CBT without the ability to prescribe medications. In a CBT session with a psychiatrist, you will work on the same core techniques as you would with any CBT provider, such as identifying cognitive distortions or challenging negative thought patterns. However, a psychiatrist can also monitor how medication affects your symptoms. This integrated approach can be especially helpful for conditions like major depression or bipolar disorder, where medication often works together with therapy to produce better outcomes than either treatment alone.

Should I see a psychiatrist or therapist for CBT?
The choice to see a psychiatrist or therapist depends on the severity of your symptoms and whether medication might be part of your treatment plan. A psychiatrist who provides CBT is appropriate when you have more severe mental health symptoms that may require medication. A non-psychiatrist therapist may be appropriate when your symptoms are mild to moderate, you prefer to try therapy without medication first, or you are already stable on medication prescribed by another provider. It is worth noting that psychiatrists typically charge higher rates than other therapists due to their medical training, and psychiatry sessions are not always covered by insurance. Therefore, some people start with a therapist for CBT and later add a psychiatrist to their treatment team if medication becomes necessary.
