As the founder of Mind Therapy Clinic, a psychiatric center focused on innovative, integrated, and personalized care, I believe in utilizing innovative approaches to treating the most common to the most complicated problems with the latest, scientifically supported psychotherapeutic and medication approaches. The Mind Therapy clinicians supplement traditional approaches with rapidly developing diagnostic technologies to more objectively identify, target, and treat psychiatric problems. An integrated approach to treating the whole person involves integrating mainstream methods with alternative disciplines and fostering collaboration between clinicians with differing backgrounds and training.

My approach draws upon various modalities, including mindfulness, somatic practices, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
I am here to listen to your story with curiosity and an open mind. Together, we can collaborate on a treatment plan that feels most aligned with your needs. My approach will include a focus on how to optimize your physical, mental, and spiritual wellness, in addition to discussing how western pharmacology can support that.

Music, art, mindfulness and somatic techniques can help tap into deeper aspects of the unconscious and Higher Self.
My work is focused on cultivating and utilizing therapeutic relationships for deep self-exploration. I value expanding consciousness to help identify and work with the root cause(s) of our joy and suffering. A prescription pad isn't sufficient to treat complex human mind-body-heart challenges like depression, anxiety, disordered eating, OCD, or PTSD/CPTSD. I believe we are all fellow-travelers seeking our own highest truth. I see sacred value in non-ordinary states of consciousness for exploration and healing. I offer Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy. I am accepting patients in IL, SD, FL, CA, and OR. I see patients in person in CA.

As a Queer Black Cis-gendered male, I know the pain and isolation of navigating systems that claim to support my success, health and wellness and fail to adequately do so due to their lack of understanding the significance of my Queerness and Blackness. I understand all too well the trauma, anxiety, depression and burnout that comes with this experience. The central concern of my work is mental suffering, it is universal, yet with unique roots for each of us. These are often confusing, even unknown. Harm may be inflicted upon our developing selves, and we may carry the pain outside of awareness. I seek to help with knowing, and with pain. Or we cannot figure out how to care for our particular bodies. They may have biological needs we cannot recognize, or again, carry hidden psychological wounds. I have trained also to help recognize and treat biological needs. I see mind and body as inextricably linked in the pursuit of health, peace, and meaning.

Somatic Psychiatrists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
