Most people, whether they have a psychiatric illness or not, need psychotherapy, at some point in their lives. I'm here to help determine what's wrong and how to best help. If a medicine is helpful, I'm trained to prescribe it. In most situations, medicine, alone, is not enough to help people disentangle themselves from the feelings, thoughts, or behaviors that have interfered with their functioning or caused such discomfort. Problematic patterns have developed over a long time, but for 'good reasons'. Until we know why, we're unlikely to change them.
Our goals for therapy are to help each person to function more optimally, i.e. to deal with life more realistically and with greater compassion for themselves (and others, as a result of the former). I'm here to help individuals liberate themselves from how their troubles from their earlier years and inherited vulnerabilities can
interfere with their freedom to operate successfully, more autonomously, and in fulfilling relationships. In addition to an undergraduate degree in psychology and residency and fellowship in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry, respectively; I've had many years in training (and now teaching) in individual psychotherapy. I'm a trained psychoanalyst. Crises can become opportunities.
