I also have subspecialty training in perinatal psychiatry, which is focused on guiding women with psychiatric conditions through the various phases of pregnancy; when trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding.
I prioritize approaching each person with humanity and respect, creating a space where they are encouraged to be their authentic self. My goal is to provide you with thorough, personalized, collaborative, evidence-based psychiatric care that helps you thrive in your life. This typically begins with a comprehensive evaluation, medical workup, narrowing of diagnoses and discussion of treatment goals that might be best suited to you. I believe in taking a whole-person approach, looking at ways to optimize your lifestyle through nutrition, exercise and mindfulness.

We all tend to seek help when what we are doing is no longer working, or we feel stuck , dissatisfied or our life is out of control, or someone we care about says that we should get help. I view these pivotal moments as potential moments of alchemy, if we are willing to be mindful with what is, staying with our experience and working through it. Remaining mindFUL allows the experience to teach us what we are supposed to learn, if we are open to it. I am here to support you as you go through your journey, face your challenges, identify patterns with you that keep you feel stuck so that you can be more free to be your best self.

I practice psychiatry with a holistic approach. During our initial comprehensive evaluation, I will ask many questions and listen carefully to gather detailed information regarding the symptoms you are experiencing, your lifestyle (nutrition/exercise), areas of stress, areas of joy, and how they fit into your life history. I may order lab tests or request to speak with your primary care provider or other members of your health team to garner more information if appropriate.

I am a Harvard-trained relational psychiatrist with 28 years' experience with psychopharmacology and insight-oriented psychotherapy. While medication can alleviate symptoms, they cannot resolve psychological pain. Nor can someone be known and understood in a 15 minute appointment. Sustained recovery takes time and occurs within a caring relationship. A psychiatrist must be fully present and authentic for patients to have reason to trust. I believe in empowering clients with education and mindfulness of their emotions, vulnerabilities and needs. Only then can symptom relief, peace of mind and JOY be fully achievable.

Female Psychiatrists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.

About Psychiatrists, meds and Psychiatric Nurses.

A Psychiatrist in Tucson is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in treating mental health issues and diagnosable disorders.

Tucson Psychiatrists differ from other mental health professionals in that they may prescribe medication as well as practice psychotherapy in treatment. Sometimes, Psychiatrists form part of a clinical team in which they will diagnose and prescribe, while psychologists or therapists provide the client's psychotherapy.

As part of a clinical assessment, Psychiatrists may conduct physical examinations, take blood tests, and order and interpret lab tests and brain image scans, such as CT scans, CAT Scans, and MRIs.

The field of psychiatry in Tucson has many sub-specialties, including pediatric psychiatry. Those who work with the elderly are called geriatric psychiatrists.

Other related sub-specialties include cognition psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, psychosomatic, forensic, reproductive medicine specialties, psychopharmacology , psychiatric genetics, neuroimaging, and clinical neurophysiology.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners in Tucson, or mental health nurse practitioners, generally have an MS degree in nursing (MSN) and a number of years of training to become certified. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are able to assess and diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. Tucson Psychiatric nurse practitioners also have training that enables them to include psychotherapy with treatment.
