There may not be a need to recommend medication if we can be curious to understand how and why our minds have taken us to where we are, or what it is about how we have experienced the world that may be preventing us from living life more fully. As a psychodynamically trained doctor, I work with people in intensive psychotherapy or psychoanalysis to explore the forest that is our emotional and cognitive mind. In knowing ourselves, we become less burdened and have more space to be present and an active participant in our lives.
While medication might be the life raft that can help us stay afloat, it cannot teach us to swim. Imaging studies show that similar changes in the brain occur whether medication or psychotherapy is started. The treatment utilized is an important personal decision and deserves careful consideration.
