I started my career as a nurse in a state-run psychiatric emergency room where I treated patients along the entire spectrum of psychiatric illnesses; many of whom were in the most emotionally vulnerable time in their lives. Having experienced this severity of psychiatric illnesses everyday allowed me to develop a level of expertise to quickly recognize symptoms and develop an accurate diagnosis so we can initiate the best treatment plan for you from the very beginning. I understand that those suffering with emotional pain cannot wait months for relief, and they shouldn't have to. I understand the need for rapid healing.

Though I treat a broad range of issues, the most common disorders that I treat include ADHD, anxiety disorders, and depression. Very often these problems interfere with the patient's school performance and may cause behavior problems at home as well. When inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, anxiety, or mood problems directly interferes with learning, or cause behavior issues that indirectly reduces a student's availability to learn, that student has an unnecessary impediment to achieving their full potential. The parents of my patients want their children to overcome these obstacles.

It can be difficult to reach out for help for ADHD, anxiety or unstable mood. Impulsivity, depressed mood or intrusive thoughts can make it hard to move FORWARD to accomplish your goals. I am a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC) treating children, adolescents and adults. My experience includes working at a major psychiatric center, outpatient and in emergency settings. I will listen. I can explain things in a way you can understand taking the time to answer every question. I offer a whole body approach, choosing medications thoughtfully. I offer security and support without sacrificing growth and change.

Dr. Summerville is a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist. She completed her residency and fellowship at the North Shore LIJ Medical Center (now known as Northwell Health) where she served as Chief Resident. She attended the State University of New York at Downstate. Dr. Summerville has private practice office locations in Bayside and Hauppauge. In addition, she has provided services to Emotionally Disturbed and Blind children through The New York Institute For Special Education and she provides psychiatric services in community-based clinics throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.
