As a woman, your mental and physical health needs are unique and often misunderstood or overlooked—let's change that together with a personalized, holistic approach. As we navigate life's stages—from adolescence and young adulthood to pregnancy, postpartum, menopause, and beyond—there may be times when our mental health calls for extra support. With a nuanced understanding of how these life transitions distinctly impact women's (AFAB) mental health, I tailor medications and complementary treatment recommendations to each stage of your journey.

I believe in a holistic, non-judgmental and client-centered approach to mental health care. I enjoy partnering with clients in their care and walking alongside them in their journey. Each and every one of us has a story and we all have unique inner strengths to face challenges in life. I enjoy fostering these strengths in addition to utilizing tools, such as medication management and/or nutritional supplements to assist clients in achieving their goals and the picture of health that is unique to them.

Are you feeling stressed out, stuck, helpless, overwhelmed with fear or disappointment, unable to focus or get anything done? Do you want to keep functioning this way? I provide modern treatment strategies, with a 3 fold approach: remove what's hurting you, support what's helping you, and grow more helpful components. This a systems based approach, targeting brain regions, neurotransmitters, signalling pathways, and inflammation. I work with people who are well-trained in how to understand and interact with the world logically; but find stumbling blocks in their psychological and emotional well-being.

Regardless of where you are at in your mental health journey, we start with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. During this evaluation, we review your history engaging in psychotherapy, psychiatric treatment, symptoms, and comprehensive medical history. This evaluation sets the stage for your mental health journey. Using an integrative psychiatry approach, I then develop a treatment plan for you that includes optimized prescription medication management, supplementation, nutrition, and lifestyle changes. I am able to provide treatment for depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar, PMDD, PPD, Autism, OCD, and disordered eating.

My ideal patients are those who advocate for their healing process and journey. As a Physician Assistant I greatly value being a guide and resource for patients, aiding them in discovering their full potential. I greatly appreciate providing an array of healing modalities including, but not limited to, medication management, holistic/herbal remedies, and brief psychotherapeutic support. While I enjoy working with all demographics, what I am truly passionate about is working with middle-aged women, especially those struggling with menstruation and/or additional complications or concerns of the female body and function.

Becoming a parent is a wonderful experience, however, for some more than others, it is accompanied by challenges and changes that moms and dads find difficult to manage. Without an adequate support system, and sometimes even when one is in place, we sometimes find ourselves overwhelmed with feelings of despair, anxiety, guilt, or shame to name a few.

My goal is to help you make transformative life changes and build emotional resilience through a collaborative process. We will work using talk therapy to explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, personality, and relationships to better sort out your reasons for seeking help. We will consider whether there is a biological aspect to your difficulties and if you may benefit from medications to enhance your therapy. Finally, we will identify your goals, strengths, temperament, interests, personality traits, and life experiences to tailor an individual treatment for you.

We all tend to seek help when what we are doing is no longer working, or we feel stuck , dissatisfied or our life is out of control, or someone we care about says that we should get help. I view these pivotal moments as potential moments of alchemy, if we are willing to be mindful with what is, staying with our experience and working through it. Remaining mindFUL allows the experience to teach us what we are supposed to learn, if we are open to it. I am here to support you as you go through your journey, face your challenges, identify patterns with you that keep you feel stuck so that you can be more free to be your best self.

Hi! My name is Holly Werstein, and I would love to work together. This quote speaks to my philosophy of care, “Emotional pain is not something that should be hidden away and never spoken about. There is truth in your pain, there is growth in your pain, but only if it’s first brought out into the open.” — Steven Aitchison. With a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, medication services, and/or psychotropic genetic testing, we will design your path to emotional relief and healing.

Amanda is a nationally certified and Colorado licensed physician assistant and medical provider at The Collective. She attended PA school in North Carolina and started her career in emergency medicine in Richmond, VA. Although she loved the fast-paced intensity of emergency medicine, it became clear that ongoing mental health support is critical, not only regarding psychiatric illnesses, but also medical conditions and day to day functioning. She decided to transition to outpatient psychiatry to be part of long-term solutions and management rather than the last line of defense.

Although carefully chosen medications can quickly achieve much needed relief of anxiety, depression, insomnia and trauma symptoms, a thorough evaluation can also identify many opportunities for improvement without medications. The most effective treatment plan may include work-life balance, nutrition and sleep strategies, address, avoid or adapting to triggers, in addition to multiple psychotherapies. When needed, medications with the lowest side effects, easiest to use, most predictably effective & not addictive are recommended. Ultimately, it is up to each person to decide which strategies they will use to achieve wellness.

Women's Issues Psychiatrists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
