A court-mandated or lawyer recommended mental health assessment is an evaluation ordered by a judge to assess an individual’s mental health and provide insights that may influence legal decisions. These assessments are commonly required in cases involving criminal charges, child custody disputes, or situations where mental health concerns may impact legal outcomes. It aims to answer specific legal questions, such as the individual’s competency to stand trial, potential risk of harm to themselves or others, or suitability for certain legal obligations like probation or diversion programs.

These are truly difficult times that we live in, especially in 2020. We have felt these stressors on a global level through the wide spread of COVID-19, economic and occupational stress, loss and grief, social isolation, and natural disasters. Regardless of how much resilience and coping skills we may have had before 2020, many of us have been left feeling in a daze, traumatized, stressed, feeling a roller coaster of emotions, and/or isolated. This level of stress starts to impact our sleep, appetite, immune system, mood, anxiety and worry, and signs of physical pain and fatigue.

I teach recovery from addiction weekly in the state prison as a public service. The participants have earned their enrollment in the Texas SAFP program through cooperation and excellent conduct. Addiction is a "search for God at the wrong address." These men are connecting with God and with a 12-Step program so when they have served their time and they re-enter the world, their focus on God and on recovery will provide the energy needed to succeed and triumph over relapse and recidivism.

The Ubuntu Somatic Support Circle is a virtual, somatic-based support group for adults experiencing mental or emotional overwhelm, functional freeze, or physical discomfort who wish to explore healing and realignment through the body’s intelligence. We meet twice monthly in a welcoming, nonjudgmental space where you are invited to slow down, reflect, and be met as you are. We use therapeutic practices that support nervous system regulation, post-traumatic integration, and somatic awareness. There’s no requirement to perform or fix yourself. Together, we explore intentionality, compassionate acceptance, and gentle movement to increase presence, calm, and mind-body connection.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
