Teen Support Group

In this Teen Support Group, we learn about trauma in context and how traumatic experiences are a part of a larger tapestry of a teen's existence. Curiosity is essential to supporting a teen understand their story. We know that trauma responses may be misunderstood or pathologized by adults leading teens to feeling unheard, unsafe and adversely impacting their self-esteem and sense of belonging. This group uses cognitive restructuring and behavioral regulation skills to normalize common threads and to support teens in identifying culturally relevant resources as we acknowledge the impact of experience on response and recovery.

In these Parent Support Group sessions, we use community and shared experiences, as a way to develop confidence as a Parent or Caretaker focusing on 12 different core concepts. A few of these core concepts are: 1) Traumatic experiences are inherently complex; 2) Traumatic experiences affect the family and broader caregiving systems; 3) Children can exhibit a wide range of reactions to trauma and loss; 4) Protective and promotive factors can reduce the adverse impact of trauma; 5) Culture is closely interwoven with traumatic experiences, response, and recovery; and 6) Developmental neurobiology underlies children’s reactions to traumatic experiences.
