Support Groups in New York, NY

Two Groups: For Parents of Children 1-6 and Parents of Middle Schoolers. In this 4 part series we discuss specific issues concerning parenting and child development. While I present certain topics, it also is a space for parents to discover their own values and goals raising their children and share dilemmas, Handouts are given prior to each meeting. Just as children have different stages of development, So to, parents have corresponding stages of development. Topics include: self-regulation, building intrinsic motivation, dealing with big feelings, love and limit setting, building self-discipline and self-esteem. Call for dates.

If you are concerned about your child or teenager, I can help. I work with children, teens and young adults who are struggling with emotional and social difficulties that may interfere with feeling more secure. Parents contact me for guidance with a broad range of issues including anxiety, relatedness issues, depression, school avoidance, learning challenges, trauma and grief. Together, we can demystify symptoms difficult to understand, so you and your child can feel deeply connected. I enjoy working with tweens, teens and young adults on identity and relationship issues, family conflict, school pressure, perfectionism, anxiety, depression, motivation and self-esteem.

This group will offer a supportive environment for all levels of recovery, as well as different processes to achieve that goal. Everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace from their own perspective. Support will also be encouraged, whether that be through discussing issues with each other or listening to your peers. Together we can share our experiences and thoughts to provide better coping skills for staying substance free. This group will begin in September.

Are you a creative person? Do you find yourself wanting a way to feel better about your life? Are you skeptical about therapy? Are you dreading the idea of dredging up the past or talking about the addiction that hasn't worked positively in your life? Focusing on what you want rather than what you don't want is more productive in the few sessions alotted by insurance companies these days. I believe you can be where you want in less time through a process of self exploration that facilitates and supports movement towards your true desires for creative expansion.

No topic is off limits in our sessions, and nothing is “too big” or “too small” to talk about. Whether you’re facing a new problem or an older one, I would love to help. I’ve worked with many clients who are trying to explore and better understand who they are, to understand their relationships with friends and lovers, or who are grappling with major life changes like relocation, changing careers, or recovering from painful past experiences. My style is direct, with honest feedback and accountability to move you forward. I am also psychodynamically trained to help you understand how the past informs the present and show you patterns in your life that may have been present with you for many years, but that aren't necessarily serving you.

Inspired by the work of Dr. Alexander Lowen, we work with the energy patterns of the body through breathing, stretching, grounding and emotional expression to relax muscles and challenge the chronic holdings in our bodies. We focus on the feelings and physical sensations that arise when tensions are released and our physical and emotional systems are enlivened. These experiential movement groups facilitate change on a deep body level: deepen the breathing, allow the body to regain its natural aliveness and vitality and increase awareness of the physical/emotional connection. They help alleviate anxiety, depression, chronic pain and sleeping problems.

I approach therapy with the understanding that our mind and body are not separated but aspects of a unified whole. Our emotions and life history are held and manifest in the body and change begins when we acknowledge and work with our full being. Through a process that goes beyond talk, I help my clients bring attention to how their concerns effect how they breathe, feel, move, think and express themselves, as I support them in gradually exploring the underlying emotional terrain.

DBT is an evidence-based program that has been proven to help teens: handle their emotions so they are less reactive and impulsive, eliminate self-harm and destructive behaviors, and better navigate their relationships (family, school, peers) by developing communication strategies and positive ways of interacting with others. DBT helps increase focus, improving school performance and building higher self-esteem so teens learn to love and accept themselves. Group therapy allows teens to connect and practice skills with peers in a structured safe space, offering a new perspective and validation from others experiencing similar situations. Parent support is also provided.

This group is open to individuals, 20’s – 40’s, who wish to develop in personal authenticity and connectedness to others. Working with moment-to-moment interactions we aim to uncover habitual narratives that stand in the way of understanding and being understood by others. Group offers a unique opportunity to be witnessed and to witness the ways in which we protect ourselves, inadvertently preventing ourselves from being a source of and a recipient of vital connection and support. Individuals struggling in relationships, with life transitions, work/career related stress or more general symptoms of anxiety or depression are welcome.

Much of my work is done with clients who are looking to grow from the many unfortunate events that have happened in their lives. I do believe that traumatic situations can destroy a person if they remain a victim. But if they are willing to do the hard work of turning that pain into power, then their situation didn't occur in vain. That is why I am both analytical and an action oriented and caring therapist.
