I proudly identify as an LGBTQ therapist who believes in a therapeutic relationship that is stepped in active-listening, empathy, and unconditional positive regard. In turn, this allows for clients to feel safe and secure when we engage in a therapeutic relationship. Therapy is about being yourself without the judgment of the world; and it is a discovery process that gives you the opportunity to visualize possibilities in life. My attention is drawn to connecting with clients, being collaborative and interactive, and learning how to help clients become unstuck in life.

Mentalization is the capacity to understand ourselves and others in the context of mental states, such as thoughts, feelings, desires, wishes, or fears. MBT groups aim to strengthen participants' ability to mentalize, thereby allowing them to better maintain relationships and choose healthier more adaptive means of expressing and managing intense feelings. This online MBT group is open to individuals in a number of states, and is co-facilitated by my colleague Edward Patzelt, a clinical psychologist.

When my clients first come to me, their lives feel chaotic and out of control. No matter what they do, they can’t seem to break free from recurrent depression, major ups and downs in their mood, and significant difficulties in their relationships. All they want is to feel more peace within themselves and in the relationships that matter to them the most. They want to be able to live life on their terms, and yet, this keeps on eluding them, even though they might be really accomplished in other areas of their life, like work.

Sessions incorporate cognitive and behavioral modalities, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), alongside elements of neuroscience, meditation, and philosophy. We will practice observing our experiences and utilizing mindfulness skills to address maladaptive patterns. Additionally, we will explore and process obstacles that hinder positive change. Our virtual DBT graduate group provides ongoing skills reinforcement and peer support for individuals who have completed an intensive DBT program. After going through comprehensive DBT involving individual therapy, skills groups, coaching, and consultation over a year or more, some choose to continue practicing DBT skills in a less intensive graduate group setting. This allows them to review core mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness skills, stay motivated by like-minded peers, and sustain progress made during primary DBT treatment.

Inspired by the work of Dr. Alexander Lowen, we work with the energy patterns of the body through breathing, stretching, grounding and emotional expression to relax muscles and challenge the chronic holdings in our bodies. We focus on the feelings and physical sensations that arise when tensions are released and our physical and emotional systems are enlivened. These experiential movement groups facilitate change on a deep body level: deepen the breathing, allow the body to regain its natural aliveness and vitality and increase awareness of the physical/emotional connection. They help alleviate anxiety, depression, chronic pain and sleeping problems.

I am an Italian psychologist and Bioenergetic therapist specializing in anxiety, depression and trauma.
I approach therapy with the understanding that our mind and body are not separated but aspects of a unified whole. Our emotions and life history are held and manifest in the body and change begins when we acknowledge and work with our full being. Through a process that goes beyond talk, I help my clients bring attention to how their concerns effect how they breathe, feel, move, think and express themselves, as I support them in gradually exploring the underlying emotional terrain.

I work with people navigating the complexities of neurodivergence, chronic illness and/or disability (with or without a formal diagnosis). In a world with narrow expectations for how our brains and bodies should function, it’s easy to feel overlooked or misunderstood when you don’t fit these molds. For example, ADHD can make it extra tough to regulate emotions, impacting everything from relationships to self-esteem. Autoimmune disorders can cause ongoing stress, burnout, and unpredictable symptoms, disrupting our daily routines. These struggles can understandably become tangled up with anxiety, depression & interpersonal struggles.

Grief could be a lonely and invisible place. As a society, we avoid talking about death and mourning, and avoid people who are in grief (often because we don't know what to say). In this group you can share and find support, learn the ways to connect and maintain relationships with your loved ones after their death, learn how to construct your own grief rituals, and deal with that numbness, anger and sadness that inevitably follow the loss. Healing starts with revealing and pain becomes lessened when witnessed. Reach out to me to sign up.

I support my clients through grief, anxiety, self-criticism, and depression on the way toward inner strength, love, feeling present and connected.
Going through loss and major life changes could be a lonely, isolating experience. Therapy provides a space of comfort, connection, and being seen. I have rich experience working with grief and helping my clients to move from the "in-between" space towards feeling alive again. Therapy is a vulnerable process that requires both trust and courage. We will build a space of change step by step. Forming a therapeutic alliance with a psychotherapist can be life-changing.

Depression Support Groups

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
