DBT is an evidence-based approach to treat emotion dysregulation. It is designed for individuals who struggle with intense emotions, mood swings, anger, impulsive behaviors, difficulty staying consistent with goals, unstable relationships, thoughts that life is not worth living, and self-harming behaviors. You will learn skills in four key areas: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. Group meets weekly for 90 minutes. Most patients participate for about a year, though some continue longer. To support your progress in DBT group, consistent participation in individual therapy is required; this can be with your current therapist or another clinician of your choosing.

Our DBT Teen offering is a structured, skills-based DBT program designed to support adolescents and their caregivers in building effective tools for emotion regulation, communication, and managing distress. Each week, teens attend a DBT skills group alongside their caregiver, meet individually with a DBT therapist, and participate in a DBT based family session to strengthen skill use at home. The program emphasizes collaboration with existing outpatient providers and is ideal for teens needing more support than traditional therapy alone. While enrolled, both teens and caregivers have access to DBT phone coaching for reinforcement of skills in real life situations.

DBT groups provide you with concrete skills to reach your goals and live a life you love. The group format allows you to build new skills while also building new relationships with people are also facing similar struggles. This creates an environment of empowerment and universality that accelerates the growth process. Research has shown that the combination of individual and group therapy is in many cases more powerful than individual therapy alone. Already have an individual therapist? That's ok, you can still join one of our groups while maintaining your current therapist. (Online Only)

DBT was created by Martha Linehan to treat people suffering with Borderline Personality Disorder, which had previously been deemed untreatable, but I find that DBT skills (including Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotional Regulation, and Distress Tolerance) are useful to everyone. Including us! Our Practice has 2 levels of DBT Group. Level 1 focuses skills training/psychoeducation and runs every 12 weeks on Tuesdays at 7pm. Level II supports clients who want support utilizing the skills they have learned in their everyday life on. This group runs on Wednesdays at 7pm on an ongoing basis. Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Support Groups
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
