Trauma and PTSD Support Groups in Albany, NY

Guiding Steps Psychotherapy, PLLC provides counseling to adolescents, adults, couples, and families. We specialize in treating trauma that comes from adverse childhood experiences and other circumstances which disrupt individuals' ability to maintain healthful social connections. The circumstances that cause trauma arise in families, schools, and workplaces that often perpetuate limiting and oppressive messages inherent in our culture. Trauma alienates people from themselves and others, causing a variety of problems such as anxiety, depression and addiction. We help people to change how they view themselves and others so that they can regain a sense of connection and control in themselves and their relationships.

This group is for individuals who grew up in families with addiction or dysfunction. The group focuses on helping members gain insight into ways their growing up years negatively affected relationships and choices later in life. We use a combination of psycho-education by briefly reading from various materials, including the Big Red Book of ACOA, the Laundry List and the Inner Parent Loving Guidebook. Members also share ways in which they see ACOA traits showing up in their own lives today and explore ways to change maladaptive behaviors and responses to stressors.

In both my practice and personal life, I have witnessed many gay men struggling sustaining intimate relationships. Often times, I have seen individuals showing signs of CPTSD when it comes to taking action that could lead to a mutual loving and supportive relationship. In this group, I seek to help members learn from each other through sharing their own experiences. The goal is to help each person get in touch with beliefs, thoughts, judgments and feelings that repeatedly make it harder to find and sustain a partner in life.

If you are struggling in a relationship, this is a group for men who listen to each other and give supportive feedback to help each member make needed changes in themselves. Sometimes, individuals get into romantic relationships where they feel like they are experiencing negative dynamics in their relationship that they witnessed in their family of origin. At times, we find we feel 'stuck' in a relationship or at worst, abused. For men in particular, this is a difficult situation. We meet virtually every other week for one hour. Contact me if you're interested in learning more.

A 3 day intensive workshop (based on the treatment model developed my Pia Mellody called Survivors) that investigates the origin of adult dysfunctional behaviors. In this revolutionary educational and experiential process, participants learn to identify and address those early childhood issues that fuel addictions, depression, eating disorders and painful relationships. The program is not about blaming caregivers; but about getting in touch with the feelings that follow any less-than-nurturing event from the past, and resolving the consequential grief and anguish. Participants will receive a set of strategies and tools needed to make permanent changes in their daily lives.

Embodied healing is a holistic approach that emphasizes reconnecting with and experiencing the body as an essential part of emotional and mental recovery. Rather than focusing solely on talk therapy, embodied healing recognizes that trauma, stress, and emotional pain are often stored in the body—and that healing involves working through both body and mind. Embodied Healing will utilize TCTSY, psychoeducation, and a reflection exercise. The TCTSY methodology is based on central components of the hatha style of yoga, where participants engage in a series of physical forms and movements. The emphasis of TCTSY is not on external appearance.

Trauma and PTSD Support Groups

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
