This group will use compassionate support, creativity, and movement to help survivors of interpersonal trauma process their emotions and learn to safely be present in their bodies. We will use gentle movement, gradually introducing new yoga poses with each week. This is open to all genders and all bodies. No yoga experience necessary and equipment will be provided. Participants should be connected with an individual therapist throughout the 12 weeks of group. Contact me to register for the next round of group beginning in June.
I provide specialized support for individuals navigating the complexities of trauma, especially stemming from religious experiences or sexual assault. Religious or spiritual trauma often manifests in feelings of guilt, shame, and unworthiness, while sexual trauma can lead to profound emotional distress and challenges in relationships. My approach is designed to address these unique experiences, fostering healing, rebuilding trust, reclaiming agency, and promoting resilience. Together, we'll explore your emotions, reshape narratives, and create a path toward empowerment and self-discovery.

The best description of what I do after 30 years of success is that I am a stress management expert for ages 2 and up. After training together in family therapy and Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), my mother and I made our dream a reality and founded The Hamilton Practice in 1995. Working with survivors of childhood abuse and trauma in Harlem for a combined 17 years, we were stunned by the miracles that unfolded as we applied the powers of connection, insight, and humor. My mother left her body in 2021, so you will be seeing only me in front of you, but you will be benefiting from the wisdom and synergy of two generations.

Hey there - you've taken that first step and are poking around Psychology Today. Or maybe you've been here before and are curious about therapy. That's great. I work with people and couples who understand that therapy is a process and that there are no quick fixes. Most of the people who walk through my doors know that life could be better, but don't quite know how to make that happen. They are ready for change. I work with couples and individuals who believe they have limited options in therapy. You are welcome here. Most of my clients want to address trauma, anxiety, stress, affair recovery, poor communication, and depression.

The effects of sexual abuse can be debilitating and life altering. Receiving support is paramount to recovery and at times, for men, the support in this area can be overlooked. Men who have experienced sexual abuse may be dealing with: shame and self-blame, feelings of inadequacy, loneliness and isolation, post-traumatic stress, sexual preference confusion, and more. My group for Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse will help you process your experience in a safe, supportive environment and help you to feel seen, heard, and validated by connecting with others who can relate to your experience(s).

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
