I believe that understanding your own story is one of the bravest, most courageous things you can do. Everyone has their own unique journey and story to tell but the way we deal with certain roadblocks is not always as straightforward. Taking that story and turning it into your strength is an even bigger feat. It is a testament to our growth and courage to actively work to understand our emotions and create positive change. I am eager to hear your story and learn about your strengths, and the troubles that keep you up at night. You can count on me to have real conversations that guide you through these hardships.

The effects of early childhood abuse are frequently felt and responded to into adulthood and until dealt with in a professional, reconstructive manner. This group is a semi-closed group, meaning members are interviewed and identified as appropriate by the therapist before admission to group. New members may be added during the life of this open-ended group. Assessment is two to four individual sessions prior to group admission to determine the fit for this group. Please email me.

During ten years of working for the Army, I developed the skill of utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in various evidence-based treatments.
For the past 22 years, I have worked with many clients who have experienced trauma from childhood, sexual abuse, combat, and other personal loss. Most people come to find peace of mind and relief from the nightmares rooted in the past. Together, we work on the reality that they are survivors and their resilience is amazing! My clients learn that they have always been their own greatest strength and are their own best advocates throughout this maze of bewildering emotional turmoil. They discover that they are indeed strong survivors as they strive toward the goal of wholeness.

Emotional eating can sabotage your weight-loss efforts and often leads to eating too much, especially too much of high-calorie, sweet, fatty foods. But the good news is that if you're prone to emotional eating, you can take steps to regain control of your eating habits and get back on track with your weight-loss goals. Learn how you can control your triggers and cravings to eating fatty foods and maintain a new and healthy life style.

I am passionate about helping people who struggle with anxiety, addiction, developmental trauma, depression, and relational issues. At the core of my approach is an attitude of warmth, acceptance, and faith in my client's innate capacity for healing and transformation. Often people come to therapy with a sense of disempowerment. The impulse to reach out in hope of finding a caring, safe, or 'true other' shows your innate wisdom and strength. We are all in desperate need of help and connection. The hope is that we can do more than just survive.

One of the issues we're facing today is a lack of quality information about what healthy masculine psychology looks like. I've created a group to address that. We use Jungian materials to have group discussions on masculine maturity. A few times a year I do a 5-week course that studies one book in particular -" KING, WARRIOR, MAGICIAN, LOVER: Rediscovering The Archetypes Of The Mature Masculine" by Moore and Gillette. Intermittently, we do one night group discussions on different aspects of maturity. Often our source materials are movie scenes, poems, quotes and myths. Email for more information.

This group is specifically designed for teens to build skills of resiliency, gain insight into thoughts, behaviors and feelings and increased confidence. Through building a sense of community, teens can move from "I thought it was just me" to "I am not alone and I matter". Rising Strong is based on the research of Brené Brown and the group utilizes storytelling, creative exercises and group discussion developmentally appropriate for teens. If we are brave enough, often enough, we will fall. This is a curriculum about what it takes to get back up and to write a daring new ending.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Support Groups

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
