Coping through Creating is an art therapy group geared toward kids aged 10-14 who need help coping with big feelings and tough challenges (and let's be real, most of us do!) and enjoy being creative. In this group, we use drawing and painting to learn how to settle the body and the mind as well as ways to problem-solve in challenging situations. The world can be a confusing place, especially for the youngest members of our society. I enjoy providing support for children, teenagers, and young adults by getting to know them, their interests, and their difficulties. I focus on social/emotional skills such as communicating feelings in a healthy way and practicing emotional regulation skills. In my practice, I have noticed that self-awareness and understanding provides a good foundation for growth. These tools and others are helpful for navigating problems such as anxiety, low self-esteem, anger, depression, and relationship difficulties.

Are you searching for a place to belong, to be heard and find healing? Mariposa Counseling was founded in 2022 by Alaina Smith. Mariposa is the Spanish word for butterfly, and it was chosen to symbolize the transformation that butterflies represent. Humans go through our own transformative journeys, and while not as obvious as a caterpillar to butterfly, it has potential to be just as impressive and wondrous. We believe every individual is worthy of dignity and respect and treat them as such.
Seeking safety is an evidenced based group using the curriculum written by Lisa Najavits. Participants learn how trauma and substance use has impacted healthy coping and how to get back to a place of healthy coping. This model is based in CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) principles and teaches how to change thinking, which influences emotions, and behaviors. This is a 16 session group which meets once or twice week depending on the cohort.

My therapeutic intervention is looking at the past as necessary in making changes for the future. I'm certain that any unwanted behavior can be unlocked by recognizing the purpose or wanted outcome for said behavior and my passion is helping you identify that unmet need and make healthy changes. I enjoy working with clients that are willing to do things outside of the therapeutic office setting such as writing, art, and/or practicing skills learned, and then reporting back in session the helpfulness of each strategy.

I guide professional women who feel like they have gotten lost in obligations and anxiety somewhere along the way; shift from perfectionism and "shoulds" to being the CEO of their mental, spiritual, and physical health (without needing years of therapy). My clients tell me they want balance and freedom in their full lives - and they truly want to transform from overthinking and over-functioning to really enjoying their lives. They simply want to take better care of themselves, and either their mind or body is getting louder - in physical pain, anxiety, restlessness, stress response, emotional eating (to name a few).

Let's Build Hope! I strive to create a validating, non-judgmental environment to teach you skills to manage anxiety, overwhelming emotions, improve relationships, and modify behaviors. You can develop the healthy life you desire. Humans experience emotions! Sometimes we may think there is a right way and a wrong way to feel and distress means, we are feeling the wrong way. That is a ton of pressure! Sometimes, our emotions become distressing. Sometimes we worry. Few are taught to manage emotions and anxiety effectively and distress can lead to self-blame, defeated feelings, strained relationships, self-harm, and more. I can help!
Life Journey focuses on making a difference! We actively work with you to envision and create the life you want. All our therapists are readily available and responsive to the needs of clients. It is not about dwelling on the past but about using life lessons to move forward in a positive way. Even our most difficult life experiences bring us wisdom, character and integrity. If you are at a low point on your journey, therapy provides an opportunity to sort through the complexities, decrease the feeling of being overwhelmed and make real progress on your current life challenges.

I 've been in private practice since 1997. Throughout that time I have continued to expand on my knowledge and develop specialties in play therapy, working with the LGBTQ community, substance abuse, and trauma including PTSD. I work with clients experiencing anxiety and depression. I see each client as unique and feel honored to join them in their journey towards health and wellness. I am affiliated with organizations that keep me abreast of evidence-based practices for the unique situations that clients bring to therapy.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups
How can I find a support group in Hamilton?
Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.
How does group therapy work?
Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.
Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.
What are the benefits of group therapy?
Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.
Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?
Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.
How much does group therapy cost?
Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.
Does insurance cover group therapy?
As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.
How long does group therapy last?
The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.
What are the limitations of support groups?
Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
