I understand the importance of developing resilience-to-change in order to effectively cope with major life transitions (marriage, birth of a child, retirement, new job). Without such resilience, life can feel overwhelming, self esteem becomes precarious, and mood can dip dramatically. Through my warm, direct, highly interactional approach (elaborated at www.marshavannicelli.com), I collaborate with clients to address behaviors that continue to cause pain. My books, teaching and supervision have provided training for 100s of other clinicians to help their clients to feel more empowered in relationship and to fulfill their potential

I work with individual, couples and groups who are in the midst of a life crisis, an enormous emotional struggle, who have experienced a traumatizing event in their lives or are grieving a loss. I have helped people access their own internal strength so they can start to feel solid ground under their feet again. Sometimes it is a process of changing something or coming to terms with a part of life that has been avoided or stuck in denial. Other times it is process of understanding more deeply and get more clarification in order to make a decision. Still others are working on re-building trust after being devastated by betrayal.

My belief is that all phases of life come with unique obstacles and opportunities for the development of deeper insight into what makes life meaningful to us. I find what often interferes with that meaning making process are deeply ingrained patterns of behavior, ways of connecting, and beliefs about who we are meant to be. These patterns in turn create seemingly unresolvable tensions in how we relate to others, the world, and our self. My hope is that in the work I do with my clients, we can create a safe, supportive, and challenging environment to explore where these patterns come from and how they continue to show up.

Body Image and You is a process group for women of all ages struggling with body image. Although body image concerns may look different for everyone, many women report preoccupation with body size, weight, and food intake, as well as constant comparison to others perpetuating general dissatisfaction with their own appearance. Group members will develop key insights into their own struggles with body image, as well as evidence-based coping strategies to assist in progressing toward a more body neutral or body positive perspective.

Accepting individuals & couples. Many clients I work with are looking for a space to process symptoms related to anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and body image/eating concerns. I work to help my clients identify what may have happened in their past that has impacted the way they feel today, and to build skills to live a more fulfilling life now. I acknowledge that therapy is an incredibly vulnerable experience, and work at the pace my clients feel most comfortable at. It is not uncommon for laughter to find it's way into my sessions, and I am able to find a unique balance between warmth and challenging to best assist you.

The stressors associated with relationships, career, and health can be difficult to navigate! Sometimes we can cope with this on our own and other times friends or family support us. Sometimes that just isn't enough; and we need an objective, nonjudgemental person who has training in counseling to help. I have many years of experience in individual and group therapy. My approach is active, genuine, and strengths-based.

This is a weekly, virtual, 12-week group where members identify and pursue a personal goal related to their healing from trauma while receiving support and feedback from others. Given the potential for trauma-oriented work to bring up painful feelings, this group is for women with relatively stable life circumstances, some good supports and coping skills for managing symptoms, and not actively self-harming or abusing substances. Is anxiety or depression preventing you from living a more fulfilling life? Are you feeling overwhelmed by a major transition? Are you unable to move on from an upsetting or traumatic past experience? I help patients change patterns of behavior that are no longer working, and learn new and more effective ways of coping and engaging with life. I believe that embedded in the painful crises that usually bring individuals and couples to therapy, there are also opportunities for self understanding and mastery that can be discovered and realized in a safe healing relationship.

The process of finding a therapist can feel overwhelming at times. I invite you here to briefly pause, take a breath, and bring some awareness into the sensations of your body in this moment. What do you notice? Are there particular thoughts, feelings, urges present? Perhaps you notice some hope or frustration, tension or ease. Seeing if you can allow space for whatever may be coming into awareness to simply be as it is, observing it with some curiosity and compassion. When you feel ready, re-connecting to what brought you here, to this page, and to this moment.

The inevitable challenges associated with parenting a learning disabled child may be rich opportunities for personal growth. We explore these opportunities in a structured, and supportive group environment. Participation in a parent support group provides three forms of support: 1) Time/space for reflection; 2) Supportive feedback from other parents who have had similar experiences; 3) Essential information (e.g., how do I set limits with my child, how can I support my child with her reading difficulties?). Parent support groups are semi-structured, with guided activities and time for focused conversation. Meetings are held on site or via Zoom.

My expertise is working with children, adolescents, and adults who struggle with some aspect of learning or who have learning disabilities. Is your child struggling to learn to read? Does your child struggle to work up to her potential? Does your child struggle to complete his school work in the allotted time? Is your child smart, yet, he does not seem to be engaged in school? Does your child struggle to pay attention in school, or when completing homework? Does your child need help in school, but you have been told that she does not qualify for services? Are you in disagreement with the school's evaluation of your child?
