I use evidence-based treatments, such as CBT, Exposure and Response Prevention, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Behavioral Activation, and behavioral parenting and approaches.
It is hard to ask for help, although it can feel impossible to cope with anxiety and OCD on your own. What most people don't know is that with a skillful, experienced clinician, evidence-based tools, and consistent practice, most people can overcome fears and worries faster than they realize. Please don't wait! If you are feeling anxious and stuck, please reach out. I have been privileged to treat many children and adults with OCD, anxiety, and related issues, for nearly 25 years. I focus on creating a nurturing space in our sessions and carefully individualize treatment. I am honored to help my clients build lives that they love.

The inevitable challenges associated with parenting a learning disabled child may be rich opportunities for personal growth. We explore these opportunities in a structured, and supportive group environment. Participation in a parent support group provides three forms of support: 1) Time/space for reflection; 2) Supportive feedback from other parents who have had similar experiences; 3) Essential information (e.g., how do I set limits with my child, how can I support my child with her reading difficulties?). Parent support groups are semi-structured, with guided activities and time for focused conversation. Meetings are held on site or via Zoom.

My expertise is working with children, adolescents, and adults who struggle with some aspect of learning or who have learning disabilities. Is your child struggling to learn to read? Does your child struggle to work up to her potential? Does your child struggle to complete his school work in the allotted time? Is your child smart, yet, he does not seem to be engaged in school? Does your child struggle to pay attention in school, or when completing homework? Does your child need help in school, but you have been told that she does not qualify for services? Are you in disagreement with the school's evaluation of your child?

A group for parents of failure to launch offspring will provide supplemental support to parents that I work with individually in a highly effective behavioral model. This collaborative coaching model that I have been using for the past 10 years helps parents identify meaningful leverage, and supports them in implementing this leverage to promote more adult behaviors in their offspring.

I understand the importance of developing resilience-to-change in order to effectively cope with major life transitions (marriage, birth of a child, retirement, new job). Without such resilience, life can feel overwhelming, self esteem becomes precarious, and mood can dip dramatically. Through my warm, direct, highly interactional approach (elaborated at www.marshavannicelli.com), I collaborate with clients to address behaviors that continue to cause pain. My books, teaching and supervision have provided training for 100s of other clinicians to help their clients to feel more empowered in relationship and to fulfill their potential

Supporting a child with intense emotions presents unique opportunities & challenges. While these children can be exceptionally compassionate and persistent; they may also struggle with anxiety, physical and verbal outbursts, impulsivity, poor self-esteem, or even suicidality and self-harm. Effective parenting requires supporting the child's identification and understanding of their emotions; while using behavioral tools to coach and incentivize positive coping behaviors, and suppress/interrupt problem behaviors. In this 16-week course, caregivers will learn skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Children to do just that. This course may be taken alone or with full DBT-C treatment.

Group focuses on the idea of growing with your adolescent. Learning more from the group leader and other parents about this diffcult developmental stage, and remembering and sharing experiences from your own teenage years. This focus helps to approach parenting from a perspective of empathy and understanding that most teens will respond favorably to. This way of relating to the young adult children living in your home will help with mutual respect, as well as, setting rules and expectations.

Parenting Support Groups

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
