Group Psychotherapy is a powerful therapeutic modality. It can be complementary to other therapies, or an alternative to individual therapy, depending on individual interests and needs. We humans are relational beings. Our concerns, frustrations, and joys, often live within our relationships. Group provides a safe-enough social sandbox to learn more about yourself, your interpersonal patterns, the way you see others, and how you are seen by others. In group a different kind of conversation takes place in parallel to more familiar conversations, and we examine our differences and similarities in surprising ways.

The stressors associated with relationships, career, and health can be difficult to navigate! Sometimes we can cope with this on our own and other times friends or family support us. Sometimes that just isn't enough; and we need an objective, nonjudgemental person who has training in counseling to help. I have many years of experience in individual and group therapy. My approach is active, genuine, and strengths-based.
Body Image and You is a process group for women of all ages struggling with body image. Although body image concerns may look different for everyone, many women report preoccupation with body size, weight, and food intake, as well as constant comparison to others perpetuating general dissatisfaction with their own appearance. Group members will develop key insights into their own struggles with body image, as well as evidence-based coping strategies to assist in progressing toward a more body neutral or body positive perspective.

I have weekly afternoon openings! Many clients I work with are looking for a space to process symptoms related to anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and body image/eating concerns. I work to help my clients identify what may have happened in their past that has impacted the way they feel today, and to build skills to live a more fulfilling life now. I acknowledge that therapy is an incredibly vulnerable experience, and work at the pace my clients feel most comfortable at. It is not uncommon for laughter to find it's way into my sessions, and I am able to find a unique balance between warmth and challenging to best assist you.

Childhood trauma is defined as "not good enough" parenting, from overt harm to subtle neglect. Our childhood experiences continue to run us as adults. Research shows that trauma is held in the body, and experiential and relational work is necessary to change this early programming. Amanda Curtin, the groups founder, has developed a step-by step process with concrete tools and exercises that allow deeper change and re-programming to occur. This group is lead by Judith Prebluda. Please see my website for details, and call for a free interview.

Therapy can be an important aid in managing transitions, stresses, and crises. It can also provide a safe and supportive context to address longstanding struggles with depression, anxiety, or other concerns.
I am a psychodynamically trained therapist who also utilizes cognitive behavioral and relational approaches. My clients describe me as attentive, supportive, and non judgemental. I view therapy as a collaboration between myself with my professional skills and training, and you with your knowledge of yourself and your desire for support and change. My attention to all-around health is also useful for working with those experiencing depression or addictive behaviors. In addition, I enjoy supporting individuals experiencing relational or familial difficulties, romantic/sexual dissatisfaction, or issues at the intersection of gender and culture.

*** Now offering virtual sessions to new patients*** Do you have concerns about your substance use? Are you worried about a loved one with an addiction problem? Are you in recovery & looking to make changes in your life? Are you looking to make changes regarding your relationship with substances? Many of my clients are parents, siblings, spouses or concerned significant others (friends, coworkers, etc) with a primary concern about someone else's well-being. Other clients I see are looking for a therapist who will meet them where they are in trying to change their substance use or assist them in their individual recovery process.
This group is designed to help individuals learn about their social and relational difficulties by exploring here-and-now interactions in a safe, confidential setting. Members are encouraged to communicate openly and honestly with one another, and to accept feedback about their responses to various situations. I am a licensed clinical psychologist with more than 25 years of experience helping clients to overcome challenges, cultivate self-awareness, deepen relationships, and live with a greater sense of personal freedom. My approach, grounded in attachment theory and psychodynamic principles, assumes that our way of experiencing ourselves, others, and the world around us is shaped by our earliest relationships. In the context of an empathic, nonjudgmental relationship, I help my clients explore their ways of moving through the world, examining habitual patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior to open up new possibilities and choices.

I provide Ketamine - Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) to adults struggling with symptoms of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress despite trying traditional treatment methods. I believe trauma underlies most mental health distress. Together we build a solid relationship based upon trust, compassion, and genuine care so that I can help you face past experiences that continue to affect your life. As you learn to accept and process the past, new opportunities emerge to shift your life back towards health and a desired trajectory. Alongside KAP, I am certified in EMDR, the Flash Technique and the Safe and Sound Protocol.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups
How can I find a support group in Cambridge?
Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.
How does group therapy work?
Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.
Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.
What are the benefits of group therapy?
Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.
Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?
Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.
How much does group therapy cost?
Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.
Does insurance cover group therapy?
As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.
How long does group therapy last?
The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.
What are the limitations of support groups?
Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
