Trauma refers to the emotional reaction triggered by sudden events like accidents, rape, abuse, or natural disasters. Following such incidents, individuals may feel shocked, stuck, guarded, or in denial. Throughout life, we encounter various challenges including trauma, family conflict, crises, divorce, abuse, childhood trauma, physical illness, unemployment, grief/loss, or social issues, all of which can impact our well-being. Together, we'll address these challenges, overcome barriers, and provide tools to enhance your life experience. Our aim is to prevent the past from immobilizing you, empowering you to embrace today and build a healthier, happier tomorrow.

Current estimates from around the world suggest that as many as one in every three women has experienced some form of disrespect related to their gender identity. Gender identity disrespect has often come from someone she knows, such as her husband or another male family member or even male members within the society in which the woman lives. It takes various forms, all of which reflect and reinforce the lack of equality women face in society no matter how old they are, to which class or culture they belong, or what income they have.

Our anger management group is specifically designed for people who realize they have a problem with controlling their emotions and impulses, their reactions to feelings of anger, and find it difficult to respond to challenging situations of any nature in a non-harmful way. Typically, anger is a secondary emotional response to a primary emotion (sadness, fear, etc.) can be found underneath the anger. Fear includes feelings like anxiety and worry, and sadness comes from the experience of loss, disappointment, or discouragement. This class is offered nationwide and also in Spanish if requested.

“Self Care” is a topic that is used frequently and can be confusing. Many times our clients will ask “how do I incorporate self care into my busy schedule”, or “I’m on a tight budget and can’t afford to pamper myself”. Our virtual group, “Heavy on the SelfCare” focuses on the 7 principles of self care while giving a theoretical but yet relatable approach to mastering daily practices.

There are lots of images in popular culture (various reality shows, social media, movies, etc.) that depict the “perfect relationship”, but what happens when the cameras stop rolling tells a different story. Though the couple is impeccably dressed and appear to be in love, behind closed doors the relationship is filled with disrespect, emotional neglect, verbal and emotional abuse, threats of physical violence which often leads to ongoing physical abuse. In this workshop we will examine, define and explore the following: The qualities of a healthy relationship, the “red flags” in a relationship, and how to safely leave an unhealthy relationship.

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
