Current estimates from around the world suggest that as many as one in every three women has experienced some form of disrespect related to their gender identity. Gender identity disrespect has often come from someone she knows, such as her husband or another male family member or even male members within the society in which the woman lives. It takes various forms, all of which reflect and reinforce the lack of equality women face in society no matter how old they are, to which class or culture they belong, or what income they have.

As a means of survival during traumatic events the mind-body connection is severed. This disrupted connection compromises the development of one’s identity, autonomy, & ability to perceive internal sensations (aka interoception). Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TSY) is a movement based practice that aims to reconnect & fortify the mind-body connection. TSY does this by using invitational language to create opportunities for choice and creating a safe space for shared authentic experiences.

One of the hardest, and most isolating, jobs in the world, parenting can be a roller coaster of highs and lows. This group is about falling in love with parenting, sharing doubts, joys, accomplishments, fears, and failures (we all have them), not about how to parent better or "right". This is a peer-support group that focuses on the idea that parenting is hard, but that if we can all join in and share the hard times and the celebrations, things will be a bit easier. Childcare available upon request, with advanced notice, at an additional cost.

Sometimes life is just hard, you are going along, and everything is fine, when, suddenly, wham!...everything changes, and leaves you asking, "now what?" You were taught how to do Algebra, but not how to deal with the situation you find yourself in. For me, therapy is about finding the right tools for you so that you can, in the healthiest way possible, thrive in the hardest times. I want you to know that you are amazing, and infinitely capable, and that sometimes you just need a little bit of help learning how to deal with life's curve balls.

Brianna believes we all have an innate wisdom inside of us that’s always there & that we enter this world w/ more access to it than ever before. She also believes that we enter this world w/ unique parts that make up our complete whole - our psyche. These parts can be wonderfully unique & terrific attributes of our personality - our strengths. However, trauma can drive these parts of ourselves into extreme roles. Despite meaning well, they can create emotional & behavioral patterns that are seen as bad, shameful, or unwanted by those closest to us - leaving survivors feeling deeply broken, unworthy, & unfamiliar on a cellular level.
In the group you will learn how to meditate, starting with shamatha ("Peaceful Abiding") meditation practice. The purpose of shamatha meditation is to stabilize the mind by cultivating a steady awareness of the object of meditation. The group will consist of basic instruction, meditation practice, sharing about experience, and a discussion of supplemental readings provided each week. This group is not a therapy group and does not require an intake appointment. A consultation form is required and will be provided at registration. Call to register and provide an email address to receive the readings for that week.

I provide individual therapy to adults (ages 20+) and specialize in helping clients heal from the impact of trauma and chronic stress. Taking the step to begin therapy can create mixed feelings for some. I will meet you where you are, realizing that you have a unique story, which you’re free to share at your own pace. Just a brief history about me: my experience in psychotherapy/counseling began over 20 years ago and has included various populations who have shared stories of rejection, abandonment, and spiritual and emotional brokenness.
There are many ways to teach social skills, but experience is usually the best teacher. We use traditional improv-theater games, activities, and concepts to assist individuals in developing the ability to read social cues, develop easy responses, practice responding to different situations, and develop their confidence in these skills. People with all levels of social skills are encouraged to participate. This group can also assist individuals in developing resilience to bullying, increase frustration tolerance, and increase individuals social connections in fun and engaging ways.

Trauma-Sensitive Yoga works alongside individual therapy to help process trauma. It isn't focused on yoga-as-exercise. It's more like mindfulness with a body/emotion focus. The goal of TSY is to reconnect with and feel safe and empowered in your own body. This is not trauma talk-therapy but rather focuses on increasing awareness of our bodies and emotions and increasing our ability to regulate what we experience through yoga techniques like mindful breathing and strengthening our cores and spines. Evidence suggests applications for somatic/nervous system healing after a history of trauma. (Based on David Emerson's TSY model.)

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups
How can I find a support group in Madison?
Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.
How does group therapy work?
Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.
Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.
What are the benefits of group therapy?
Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.
Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?
Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.
How much does group therapy cost?
Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.
Does insurance cover group therapy?
As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.
How long does group therapy last?
The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.
What are the limitations of support groups?
Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
