Michael King, offers tips for staying true to yourself, even in the face of pressure. When we reach adulthood, we often think that some of the pains of childhood are behind us. But, worries about how we look, the desire to be accepted, sometimes even the willingness to do something just to fit in continue to affect us whether we're teenagers or seniors. The good news is that there are ways to ensure the people in your life are there to lift you up, rather than bring you down. New Group forming in Jasper, GA.

ASAM Level I classes are designed according to the ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) criteria for addiction treatment. Specifically, ASAM Level I classes provide individuals with a supportive and instructive environment where they are encouraged to develop deeper insights into the causes & conditions of their addictive and abusive behaviors. It is well understood in the medical and scientific communities that substance abuse is associated with more fundamental or rudimentary cognitive deficits. Some of these deeper issues may be deficits in emotional regulation, diagnosable affective disorders, or a consequence of a myriad of other socio-cultural, environmental, and genetic factors.

Kennesaw Trauma and Addiction Center (KTAC) is an intensive outpatient program that lasts 10-12 weeks and supports clients 3 days a week for 10 hours/week. It is possible to work while attending our program. If you have a substance use issue that you feel interferes in your family/work/ or just parts of your life, this program may be for you. We believe that underlying issues such as trauma can exasperate every day functioning. Insurance usually covers such treatment. If that is something you may be interested, give us a call and we can talk more about it.

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
