Many of us have long-established beliefs that we must deal with our struggles and dilemmas "by ourselves," without realizing we have fallen into patterns that drain our vitality and our passion for life. These patterns limit the ways we - as men - connect with others and do meaningful work in the world. At some point, it is important for one to learn the difference between living life by yourself and living for yourself. We often forget about or become threatened by the power of community; losing sight of the ways we can be supported by others while also being able to support others.

I help professional men who feel depressed and anxious because they have experienced trauma. Men who are having relationship difficulties and feel uncertain about what they want in their lives. Who struggle with their sexuality and do not know where they fit in? Their lives are not working because they feel stuck and unable to attain their life goals. By exploring in-depth the function of their depression and anxiety we can understand the underline issues and challenge those cognitive distortions. So, the change not only happens cognitively but also with bodily awareness.

This group meets via telehealth. 24:7 Dad® Program is an evidence-based fatherhood program used to improve the knowledge, behavior, and skills of dads. The program is built on the basis that fathers are nurturers, and for men, nurturing is a learned skill. Each group needs 10 participants, and we regularly start groups when that quorum is reached. Email to register for this Father Empowering Program, bring a friend! The session fee may be covered by your insurance if you have United Health Care or Aetna. The per group session fee is $50 and the registration fee is $30.

One afternoon I told my wife that after another tour, I would be leaving the U.S. Coast Guard for a very different career. Serving my country and the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard is one of the greatest honors and privileges of my life. After serving for nine years I knew that directly assisting and serving people is the life-giving work of my heart. I became a Social Worker and therapist because it is my greatest joy and pleasure to support you as you unify all your strengths and gifts to release your Faith, Hope, and Love into society.

This Zoom group is for men of all ages, who grew up in narcissistic families, with at least one narcissistic parent or sibling, and who are struggling in their relationships as a result of their own personality issues. It is also for men who are struggling with sex addiction, for whom sexually acting out has been an escape from the underlying pain connected to their family of origin, or other sources. This group, which has been ongoing for over 20 years, is a powerful, insight-oriented experience for intelligent, growth-oriented individuals, especially those who have affected their relationships through narcissistic and/or addictive behaviors.

As an LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist, I understand how anxiety and low self esteem can be unrelenting companions, whispering worst-case scenarios and drowning out the voice of reason. The knots in your stomach, the racing heart, the feeling of impending doom. The weight of sadness can be suffocating, draining your energy and leaving you in a constant state of emotional numbness. Through our sessions, I will help you uncover the roots of your anxiety and sadness, providing you with coping strategies to manage their grip on your life. I want you to know that there is hope beyond this darkness and we will find it together.

This group is ideal for men who want to explore themselves, deepen relationships and improve emotional intimacy. Some sessions have a specific men’s health topic, such as communication or intimacy. The information that I provide on these topics is practical and lends itself to a thoughtful discussion afterwards. As the discussion deepens, group members share their experience of the group dynamic with each other, which provides an opportunity for individuals to receive feedback about how they are perceived by others. You may schedule a 15-minute consultation with me, free of charge, to see if this may be a good opportunity for you.

I help individuals who are feeling stuck or disconnected explore what's getting in the way, and create a life that they find meaningful and fulfilling. I do this using evidence based methods that are tailored to the person's specific values, preferences, and needs. I believe that identifying your strengths and what drives you is as important as pinpointing problem areas. I strive to create a safe, supportive, and judgment-free atmosphere so you can connect with your purpose, your most authentic self, and in turn, with others in your life.

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
