Striving to honor ourselves and our losses so that our loss honors those we love.
I identify as an ethicist; a Womanist who advocates and practices feminist ideals, cultural humility through continuous learning, bodily integrity, reproductive justice, sex work is work, pacifism by utilizing non-violent resistance techniques. I believe children have rights, whistleblowers are vital in society, I embrace LGBTQ+, Black Lives Matter is factual, and representation matters. I practice mindfulness with the philosophy of ‘margin to center’ action. I embody, advocate, and support activism in action and respect of human rights. Neither ever ends, even when it is inconvenient or uncomfortable. We must remain firmly resolved

Loss, grief and illnesses can be hard to bear and cause feelings of aloneness.
Much suffering comes from self limiting views and a judging mind. With mindfulness there can be transformation that comes with changing our relationship to what's happening - rather than trying to change what's unfolding in our lives. I am currently participating in the Compassionate Inquiry Professional Training - the approach originated by Gabor Mate, MD.

At times, all of us experience "lostness" - be it around our sense of self, a relationship, a death, or dreams of the past or future.
In my practice, I incorporate training in grief and trauma-focused therapies, mindfulness and somatic techniques, and relational psychodynamic approaches. My experiences as a leadership coach and facilitator, birth doula, yoga teacher, family member, parent and friend all inform how I support people through life changes and challenges.

It can be helpful to share your experience with others who have been affected by the death of a significant person. Each session in this 6-week workshop series/support group includes dicussion of a particular topic (e.g., facts/myths about grieving, frustration with a lack of understanding/social support from others, changing life roles after a death, cultural and spiritual aspects of grief, traumatic grief), a coping strategy, and sharing of resources. Aunque hayan pasado varios años desde que emigraste, sientes que algo en tu identidad ha cambiado. Experimentas un desarraigo que te dificulta encontrar un sentido de pertenencia. Does it ever feel like you’re caught between worlds? Whether you’re adapting to life in a new country, reconciling your family’s expectations with your own, or feeling the weight of being “the first” to figure it all out, life can feel overwhelming. Maybe you’re an immigrant building a new chapter far from home, a first-gen juggling cultures and identities, or in a relationship trying to navigate your differences while staying connected. You’re doing your best, but inside, the self-doubt, anxiety, and disconnection are exhausting. You’re longing for clarity, connection, and a life that feels like your own.

My therapeutic viewpoint is that all clients can change if they have a supportive therapist in a therapeutic environment that is conducive to change. Additionally, they must have the desire to change, set goals, and work on the skills needed outside of the counseling session to create lasting change.

It's normal to be going through a hard time. But if you haven’t yet discovered what helps you manage your unique stressors, relationships, and boundaries, then life likely feels so much harder than it needs to. If you're feeling stuck, having an outside perspective can help you see different paths through a difficult terrain. Whether your troubles stem from internal or external issues, I know that by creating a warm and reflective space where we explore your worries, challenges, and motivations, you can find places of relief and even joy.

Interpersonal group therapy is a powerful way to learn about ourselves and our relationships with others. My groups are usually 6 - 8 people who meet together weekly for 75 minutes with two therapists to work through relational issues that lead to psychological symptoms or dissatisfaction in relationships. People who join an interpersonal therapy group usually want to be able to relate better with others and to feel better about themselves.

Grief Support Groups

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
