Chronic illness can often be a qualifier for trauma, not only for the patient but for those individuals who love the patient. It is a time of identity change, where the ways in which the patient once viewed himself/herself changes. The individual often has a need to re-adjust and reorganize their lives, grieving the life that they once had. Chronic illness offers the individual a unique opportunity to re-define themselves and how they interact with the world, most notably in relationships.
