Groups for Divorce Betrayal Trauma.
Through my work and training as a former Superior Court Mediator with Family Court Services, I possess a unique set of skills that can assist you in reducing much of the anxiety related to divorce and custody issues. Understanding that separation and divorce is not the end of your family-it is a transition. One that takes adjustment and a reframing from all parties. In addition to working with couples to develop a parenting plan, I also work a divorce coach or a therapist to individuals depending on your particular needs related to your separation & divorce.

Most distressed couples respond well to the type of therapy I provide, but for those who have already separated or are going through a divorce, I facilitate groups to make that process easier.
I believe that one of the main payoffs of effective therapy is that a person feels understood, and truly connected with and supported, sometimes for the first time in his or her life. While there is a commonality among all human beings, I treat each patient with sensitivity toward that person’s own individual personality and feelings. You’re the expert on you - I help you to understand more clearly who you are, what are the causes of feelings that may be interfering with your sense of well-being, and help you cope with life in a more skillful manner, and feel better.

I also offer 8-week skills-based online divorce support groups for men and women in CA, NC, and FL.
Do you and your partner have a hard time resolving conflict? Or, if you're divorced, is the level of acrimony between you and your ex so intense that it feels impossible to co-parent? I help both partnered and divorced couples learn how to regulate their emotions and communicate skillfully. I also help people who struggle with sexual compulsivity and love addiction learn to manage their feelings without resorting to destructive behaviors or staying attached to unhealthy people. Finally, I help adult adoptees explore how complicated grief has shown up in their lives and learn what secure attachment looks like.

I'm really familiar with the problems vexing adolescents (10-25+yrs) including conflicts with friends & parents, the struggle to mature into one's own, healthy, confident person, social & academic pressure, transitions, loss & issues around divorce.
It takes courage to begin therapy. Feeling stuck, depressed or anxious, looking for clarity on how to move forward? My relational, psychodynamic approach helps us to connect empathically with your deeper needs, hopes and concerns. I encourage clients to build on their inherent strengths & acknowledge ways they may be impeding their own progress. My hope is to help you understand why you encounter the same kinds of frustrating roadblocks, and how you might make greater room in your life for more satisfying outcomes; while increased self-awareness doesn't guarantee change. it can open the door to new real & unimagined possibilities.

Working through my own painful losses and life experiences (including marriage, divorce, single parenting, step-parenting, grandparenting, developing a chronic medical condition, grief, etc.) has given me a perspective that is exceptionally helpful to others.
You may be feeling stuck, discouraged, angry or depressed about your life or relationships. Maybe there's a medical condition with emotional effects on you or others. Your family life or parenting situation may be difficult. Maybe you're having trouble with co-workers or siblings. Or you may have just lost your way and don't know where you are going or how to get there ... wherever "there" might be. Whether you believe we choose our own circumstances, that there is a "master plan," or that sometimes SHTUFF happens, you still have reactions, feelings, and decisions to make about "what next?" I can help.

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
