This group is for women 45+ who are trying to break the cycle of drinking alcohol. Studies show that there is an increase in high-risk drinking in women (58%) and in age groups 45 to 64 and 65 and older. The increase could be related to work stress, retirement, financial pressures, empty nest, or challenges associated with menopause. If this seems like a group that you could benefit from, contact Jennifer for a personal assessment.

This in-person, clinician facilitated weekly group will provide ongoing support for long-term recovery. Clients will be able to process past trauma, gain coping skills, and develop sober social support. This group is less about not using substances and more about exploring underlying trauma or challenges that can become obstacles to recovery and personal growth. While we emphasize long term abstinence from substances, we know that returns to use are often part of the process and can be great learning opportunities. Clients will learn skills drawn from cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and mindfulness practice. Group size 6-8.

Group therapy can serve as an adjunct to ongoing individual psychotherapy or can serve to provide ongoing, bi-weekly support to attorneys who perhaps are more approaching the “maintenance” phase of therapy. The group experience can also serve as an invaluable “sounding board” on a bi-weekly basis to help attorneys work through ongoing frustrations and challenges in an optimally safe and embracing environment.

When life gets messy, we come together. This is an open-minded, non-judgemental space where members can get curious about their relationship with drugs & alcohol. We’re taught to see substance use as the problem, when it’s often an attempted solution to deeper challenges. Together, members will take a closer, more compassionate look at what’s really driving their use & get clear on what they want for themselves — defining goals that are shaped by their own desires, not just external expectations. From safer use, to cutting back, to targeted or complete abstinence, all goals are welcome & respected.

Feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression are common when it comes to drug and alcohol misuse. If you think you’d thrive in a collaborative and supportive environment, then group therapy might be an option for you. You will meet with 6-8 other participants and together you’ll learn techniques to better care for yourselves while using drugs and alcohol. One of the greatest aspects of the group program is that our clients find that relating to others who are going through the same thing helps them have more self-compassion.

Alcohol Use Support Groups
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
