Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Support Groups in Pleasanton, CA

Many moms have a hard time after having a baby. Sometimes, it can really help to talk openly with other moms who are going through the same thing. I offer both in-person and virtual supportive therapy groups for moms with babies under one year of age. In these small, judgement-free groups, I introduce a new topic related to motherhood each time we all meet. Please contact me to be pre-screened for the group and to reserve a spot. (Feel free to bring your baby.)

Does your child struggle with constant worrying or anxious ruminations? Are their fears getting in the way of their ability to enjoy life? This group will present the origins of anxiety in a way that children can understand and resonate with. Understanding their anxious response is the first step to overcoming their fears. This group draws partially from the Coping Cat curriculum, teaching skills that children can use with the help of a parent or on their own in order to manage their anxiety.

I like using narrative therapy, Compassion Focused, Positive Psychology and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies for individual counseling.
You need to process in order to grow. You have so many tools but they are not serving you like before. This is a new time in your life and it requires outside support from someone who can help you find new tools and new relationships to yourself, your family, and community. I know women don't often toot their own horns but I have been rated the best therapist in Berkeley on two separate websites (thetenrated.com and threebestrated.com). I will teach you to integrate all aspects of yourself so you don't have to compartmentalize the hurt parts of you. Often times, this means grieving the past and creating new traditions to grow from.

This group weaves in cognitive-behavioral approaches and mindfulness strategies so teens can build the tools they need to manage their anxiety. Research has shown that group therapy is an especially effective treatment modality for those suffering from social anxiety. Exposure is key to overcoming anxiety, and individual therapy alone does not provide the opportunity for teens to face their fears head on. Group therapy provides a supportive environment where your teen can connect with peers they can identify with and build relationships with, and it is far less costly than traditional talk therapy. Accepting referrals for ages 13-18.

Emotional Regulation & Social Skills: Could your child use help managing big feelings and impulses? This group draws from Michelle Garcia-Winner's social thinking curriculum, using a narrative-based approach to these behaviors by externalizing them as "Unthinkables" characters that your child will learn to combat - just like their favorite superheroes! Using a group format, your child can connect to peers who have similar struggles and develop skills in these areas and build new friendships. This is a great group for children with ADHD or high-functioning ASD. Neither diagnosis is required to join the group.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Support Groups

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
