My most curious question is: what do you want? how do you want to be different? How do you want your life to reflect about you, what you care about, what your values are? Therapists can be honest, truthful and direct with clients. I have a commitment to be direct with empathy and compassion to each and every client I work with in my office. Therapy can be solution focused with a clearly defined plan driven by the client. Vague goals, vague results. Today. most clients seeking therapy are seeking relief and understanding within a reasonable period of time. Again, that timeframe should be determined by the client.
At Awakening Mental Health, PLLC we have developed a comprehensive body image therapy group curriculum devoted to helping adults learn to accept and appreciate their bodies. This group challenges the negative messages regarding people’s bodies that come from the media, culture, and peers. Clients learn skills which help them to stop blaming their bodies and to recognize the beliefs and feelings that lead to negative body-image and eating disorder patterns. * You do not have to have an Eating Disorder to attend this group*.

Adulthood has brought you so much freedom and opportunity, but ghosts of the past, and the imposing and insistent ideas about you from childhood sometimes come back and flood you with self-doubt, imposter syndrome, fear, and tentativeness in relationships. You have SO much to offer the world and you’re craving deeper connection, love, and joy. Build that life in the company of peers who’ve been there and get it…

Maybe coming to therapy is an easy, intuitive next step for you. You know and trust yourself to find just the right counselor. You know what you need from therapy to support your relationships, career/life satisfaction, self-care needs, or trauma recovery. I trust your inner wisdom and can’t wait to collaborate with you. Or, maybe you’re more tentative about this whole “therapy” thing. Life may have taught you that trust is precious–that reaching out for support could be dangerous. You may have even gotten the message not to believe in or advocate for yourself. Well, this might be a surprise: I also trust *your* inner wisdom.

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
