Carol S. Pearson Ph.D.

Carol S. Pearson, Ph.D., D.Min., is an internationally known authority on archetypes and their application to leadership and organizational development, best known for books such as The Hero Within: Six Archetypes We Live By and Awakening the Heroes Within: Twelve Archetypes To Help Us Find Ourselves and Transform Our World, The Hero and the Outlaw: Building Extraordinary Brands Through the Power of Archetypes (co-authored by Margaret Mark); Mapping the Organizational Psyche: A Jungian Theory of Organizational Dynamics and Change (co-authored by John Corlett); and The Transforming Leader: New Approaches to Leadership for the Twenty-First Century (ed.), which grew out of a three year project with the Fetzer Institute that she co-led. This book recently received an award given at the ILA Annual Convention for making an original contribution to leadership studies and practice, has been showcased as providing a theoretical underpinning for Georgetown University’s Institute for Transformational Leadership.

Her newest book, Persephone Rising: Awakening the Heroes Within (released in October 2015) is written for women and the men who partner with them at home, at work, or in the community. In May 2016, Persephone Rising was named a gold medalist in the category of books for women by the Nautilus Book Awards, an annual accolade of books in the genre of social and environmental justice. The book’s purpose is to help them thrive in today’s complex world, while also making a contribution to others and to the greater good. In this book, she emphasizes the importance of both men and women having access to qualities that have historically been identified as masculine and feminine. Since our culture is increasingly encouraging both men and women to prioritize the masculine with the result that it is out of balance, valuing and integrating the feminine into our lives and work can be particularly transformational--for both individuals and groups.

A respected scholar and higher education administrator, Dr. Pearson served most recently as Executive Vice President/Provost and then President of Pacifica Graduate Institute. Previously, she was Professor of Leadership Studies in the School of Public Policy, and the Director of the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership. During her tenure, the Academy was the incubator of the International Leadership Association (ILA), and Dr. Pearson was a member of ILA’s Board of Directors.
