Peter M. Hartmann, MD, DLFAPA, is a renowned physician dual board-certified in Family Medicine and Psychiatry, whose five-decade career has bridged clinical care, academic leadership, and psychiatric innovation. Though retired, Dr. Hartmann currently serves as an Executive Producer for Voyage Media’s podcast The Mind Doctor, a medical mystery fiction series inspired by some of his actual cases and continues to give public lectures on mental health topics that bridge the gap between mind and body.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, he earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his psychiatry residency at the renowned Sheppard Pratt Hospital, affiliated with Johns Hopkins University. The recipient of multiple clinical and academic awards, Dr. Hartmann is also a graduate of Harvard Medical School’s Media and Medicine program, where he explored narrative as a tool for healing and advocacy in modern medicine.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hartmann has held faculty and administrative roles at leading institutions including the University of Maryland, Penn State College of Medicine, and Drexel University. As both a family physician and psychiatrist, he has been a trusted consultant for complex cases that required navigating the interplay between physical illness and mental health, particularly in hospital and rehabilitation settings.
A Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Hartmann has published extensively on topics including somatoform disorders, AIDS-related dementia, sleep and mood disorders, and the integration of mental health into primary care.
