Marina Weiler, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist specializing in neuroimaging and cognitive neuroscience. During her Ph.D. at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), she researched MRI biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease. In 2016, she moved to the U.S. to work at the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIA/NIH), where she focused on noninvasive brain stimulation to address age-related memory decline. Later, at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), she investigated MRI biomarkers related to epilepsy following brain trauma. In 2023, she became an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia’s Division of Perceptual Studies, where her research centers on extraordinary human experiences such as out-of-body experiences.
Marina's contributions to the field have earned her prestigious awards from institutions such as the Fundação Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES, Brazil) for the Best PhD Thesis in 2015, the Brazilian Academy of Neurology, the National Institutes of Health (NIH, US), the Templeton World Charity Foundation, and the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Research. Outside academia, Dr. Weiler finds profound fulfillment in her role as a devoted mother to her lively 8-year-old child. With an adventurous spirit and a love for imaginative play, her child often dreams of fantastical scenarios, including reincarnation as a feline and a fascination with crashing planes.
