About

Linda Austin, M.D., is the host of the podcast "They're Driving Me Nuts!" She is a board-certified psychiatrist with over forty years of clinical experience. She served as a tenured Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina, becoming Associate Dean for Public and Continuing Medical Education and Director of University Communications. Linda taught and supervised residents in interpersonal psychotherapy, ran an Obsessive Compulsive Disorders program using cognitive-behavioral techniques, and participated in clinical drug trials. She served for a decade as a Senior Examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Linda was introduced to using mass media in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo when the importance of mass communication after population-based trauma became obvious. This led to decades of work using media to teach the public about mental health and mental illness. Programs included 13 years as host of the SCER public radio show "What’s On Your Mind? With Dr. Linda Austin"; the Cine Golden Eagle award-winning film "Depression: The Storm Within," commissioned by the American Psychiatric Association; a daily public radio segment "An Ounce of Prevention" about preventive health; a 960-podcast library for MUSC featuring faculty from all departments; and three books, Responding to Disaster: A Mental Health Clinician’s Guide, What’s Holding You Back: Eight Critical Choices for Women Success; and Heart of the Matter: How to Find Love, How to Make It Work.

Linda received her undergraduate and medical education at Duke University and trained in Psychiatry at Georgetown University. She is a grandmother of five and lives with her husband in South Carolina and Maine.
